Usually people think that Saint Petersburg was named after Peter the Great (Peter I), one of the most famous Russian tsars and imperors. Actually, that's not exactly the true. The story in brief. 🤓
.
Peter I named the city Санкт-Петербу́рг (Sankt-Peterburg) after the Dutch version of the name of his own patron - Saint Peter [aka Simōn] Apostol of Jesus Christ when founded the city in 1703.
.
In 1914, the city was renamed into Petrograd (means "Peter's town" in Russian) - this time in honor of Peter the Great, indeed. The reason to change the name was directly connected with World War I. Russian government decided the name Sankt-Peterburg sounded “too German,” even though it wasn’t actually German.
.
The city remained Petrograd until the Soviet government renamed it as Leningrad after Lenin’s death in 1924. Then, in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city was named again Saint (not Sankt) Petersburg - this time definitely after Peter the Great who created this amazing city with his extraodinary willpower 💪🏻
.
So if someone ask you if #SaintPetersburg was named after its founder, you can feel free to respond "Yes and No". 😀One of my favorite answers 😁
.
I will tell you more about #PetertheGreat but later, that's enough #history for today. Let's speak about nowadays. ❗️ATTENTION! If you are in Saint Petersburg now or going to be here this weekend, don't miss #NavyDay this Sunday! ⚓️ 🎉In the marine city, the homeland of Russian fleet it is something! Believe me! 😎
I will write more details in the next post. Stay tuned! 👋🏻
