Beyond proud of my husband finally had his probation pinning ceremony he finished his last June but finally had their ceremony..this guy is such a hard working man ever since I've met him back at Stater Bros in 2010. He is such a great dad and wonderful role model to our son I can't tell you how many days he spent studying late and getting up early from his days at CSFU to Rio Hondo fire academy to working two jobs at staters and utility driver for Fullerton and then his probation with Brea Fire dept. Congratulations Gregory for all you're hard work! #breafire #firefighter #cityofbrea #papabear

"Only in this great country of ours can a 13-year-old immigrant who arrived knowing just three words in English (yes, no and monkey) grow up one day to work for the President of the United States.” So said Araz Pourmorad, 2003 Brea Olinda High graduate. @barackobama

It was a great honor and the privilege of my life to serve the Obama administration in the White House, but now my nine-year journey has come to an end,” Araz wrote as the administration wound down this past winter.

Araz first served at the White House as deputy director of operations and continuity, and later was promoted to State Protocol. During his years in that post, he managed the visits of heads of states and governments to the United States.

Travel was also part of his “amazing experience,” as his work took him all over the world.

Not one to forget his roots, Araz expressed special thanks to his parents, Fereydon “Fred” and Fatemeh Pourmorad of Brea, for making the sacrifices they did so he could have this special opportunity. While serving in Washington,D.C., he also invited three of his Brea Olinda High teachers, Barbara Arcyznski, Janet Chapluk and Marjorie Sepulveda, all of Brea, to visit the White House.

A USC graduate with a degree in political science, Araz said he particularly loved the First Family’s dogs, Bo and Sunny, and adored acting as the Easter Bunny in the 134th White House Easter Egg Roll.

Asked what he thought of former President Barack Obama, he said he believed him to be “one of the greatest presidents in history.”

Though sad to say goodbye to his friends in D.C., Araz has landed on his feet and now works on public policy at Google.

We knew him when…

Historical Tour Guide, here!

Chapter one: Who Knew?

"Oh, history is anything but dull,” Charlie replied, “What’s more, I can prove it to you.”

“How’s that?” inquired Skyler.

“Simple,” Charlie explained. “Because I’ve been around longer than you have, I’ve had much more time to learn about history. But I’ve also lived through more history, which means I have some great stories about Brea to share…if you’d like to hear them.” •
“Brea history? Brea’s too new to have history!” cried Lauren. “Just check out what’s here on Birch Street – everything looks like it was built last week!”

Charlie pursed his lips and nodded. “I get why you might think that,” he said. “Lots of places in town do look almost new, but not everything does. Can you think of a place that looks older?”

“Laurel School!” shouted Roman.

“City Hall Park!” cried Skyler.

“The Olinda Oil Museum!” yelled Jarred.

“Brea Junior High!” exclaimed Madison.

“All correct,” encouraged Charlie, “and a great start to thinking about Brea’s history. But there’s a lot of history here that goes even farther back, whether it’s a hundred years ago or thousands of years ago or even longer than that.”

“Really? You can tell us about all that?” asked an eager Skyler.

“Absolutely,” said Charlie with a wink. “And I can show you too.”

The students looked at each other and back at Charlie, who’d begun to chuckle softly. “Look and learn,” he said.

The next thing they knew, Charlie’s eyes and mouth and clock face all had disappeared, and in their place what looked like a small, round TV screen had formed. On it, a picture of Brea’s past slowly was coming into focus.

“There’s trees full of oranges everywhere!” shouted Lauren. “And look how many oil wells there are! And there’s a train too! Charlie, who knew?”
