Yesterday, I had my first bicycle race ever, an uphill fixed gear route organised by Ottawa's @Aerosaur club who have become good friends.
I went in there with a few handicaps: last time I climbed serious hills was in April, I DJed 4-days straight and had slept only for three hours, I had a light breakfast, I never warmed up which was silly of me, my heavy @cinelli_official @mashsf bike was an inefficient tool (I cannot wait for my Vigorelli steel and the new secret one). The worst of it all was that I entered a sprint discipline as an endurance rider.
Basically, it's exactly as if a marathoner went against 100m sprinters.
My goal was to finish without dying and I managed just that. I was dead last however and people were like "So... this guy just cycled across Canada and he just got smoked just like that?" LOLOLOL.
Yup! And I knew that would be the outcome so I was not even sad. If we were racing 160km on "fixies", I'd stood a chance perhaps.
I still celebrated big time though: this was my fastest climb of anything in my history of riding bicycles. I have never managed to climb above 16 km/h and yesterday I was clocking 19 km/h which is amazing!!! I cannot wait for next year's event! Thanks to the other racers for waiting for me for so long when I got to the top one billion years later 🖖🏿🖖🏿🖖🏿 📸: @kaylielyzun
