I’ve been listening to a lot of people the past few years when they’ve told me I should try and help change things in cycling. I want to do it with CHPT3 under my own terms, but that’s a long game and actually has very little to do with professional cycling, which is what those people I was listening to were talking about. It has not been an easy decision for me to put my name forward as a candidate for the CPA (the professional cyclist’s union) because I knew it would not only take up a lot of my time and resources, which I barely have as it is, but also drag me back into a world I’m trying to break free from. Yet the thing is, I loved my time in the peloton, and it breaks my heart seeing it being treated like shit. So I’m going to do this, and I’m dragged back in, and the trolls are out and it’s hard and it’s an emotional roller coaster that I’m now strapped into. But it’s worth it because I know I have to do this, because for the moment nobody else will, and if this raises awareness and brings the peloton together and stronger than ever before even with my undoubted defeat, then it’s worth it. And regards the trolls, the father of one of the young riders - @gabzcullaigh - I looked after a few years ago sent me this when I told him I hoped he wasn’t put off by what a few people say and believe about me, ‘David, keyboard warriors are a scourge in all discourse. I've often found the majority on any division is silent, rather like the visible verses the invisible dimensions of an iceberg.’ I need the majority to stop being silent, and this is my message to the peloton, stand up and be loud. You need to make noise, and if you do, and if we do this right, you will be the most powerful voice in professional cycling. Let’s do this. Link in profile.
