This is it! The film I waited a loooooong time to see and boy, was it worth it! May, 1980. Man-seob is a widowed Seoul Taxi Driver who lives in a rented apartment with his daughter and is way behind on the rent. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, German journalist Jürgen Hinzpeter hears of the civil unrest happening in Gwangju, South Korea and decides to go there for rare on-the-ground coverage. When Man-seob hears of a foreigner willing to pay 100,000won for a return trip to Gwangju, he immediately rushes to the scene and together, they both set out in the Taxi and literally ride into the Gwangju Uprising, where they meet Jae-sik, an English-speaking student protestor and Tae-soo, a local taxi driver. A Taxi Driver manages to live up to its excellent reputation in every way! The scenes of riotings are especially well-shot. But the heart of the film lies with the characters, and the actors playing them. Asian films usually have a poor track record of casting Western actors in films, but Thomas Kretschmann is excellent as Hinzpeter. However, this is undoubtedly a Song Kang-ho vehicle and he is, as always, absolutely first-rate! This man could pretty much sit on a stage and read me the alphabet and I would still be mesmerised! Is it any wonder that the last three South Korean submissions to the Oscars have all been Song Kang-ho films? An incredible true story that deserves repeat viewing, A Taxi Driver has gotten a stellar bluray release from @smlifedesigngroup. The goodies, including a duplicate Kim Man-seob taxi license and Hinzpeter’s passport, are too good to describe. Oh, and my set came with a card signed by director Jang Hoon ☺️ A Taxi Driver comes with my absolute highest recommendation.

** Weekly 📆Thoughts 💭 **
*
*
💭 #WonderWoman pics released this week for the upcoming sequel. Now, I’ve only seen #BatmanVSuperman once or twice but wasn’t it established that Diana Prince stopped fighting when she lost her true love Steve Trevor. So why she in 1984 stuntin’ in her costume? I thought she went into retirement. Somebody Lyin. *
*
💭Anyone else finish S2 of #QueerEye on #Netflix? Wasn’t the first episode with Mama Tammy just good for the soul. I think her and the work she’s doing in her community is incredible. Love her. *
*
💭#Hereditary had a strong hold for its second week grossing 7 million and only falling a meager 48% which is pretty great for a horror film that’s had its share of strong opinions. I’m telling you the passion I have for this film knows no bounds. I hope more people give it a chance and go in with an open mind. *
*
💭Did anyone see #Tag?? The film’s soundtrack was lit AF! A 90’s #musical lovers hit #playlist of #hiphop & #rap. KRS-One, The Pharcyde, Ahmad & #ATribeCalledQuest are just some of the artists that play thru the film that had me noddin’ in my seat.
*
*
💭#Aquaman trailer to be released at #SDCC toward the end of the weekend; hopefully a poster before that. *

Emerald City. Tarsem Singh, 2017. L’ Enfant completes this special trilogy series designed to promote the masterworks of The Dardenne Brothers.
L’ Enfant is a street film, one in which Jean-Pierre And Luc place aside arbitrary views in favor of solid pavement footprints as markers indicating the complexities of street life reckoning. So often you’ll hear someone remark about another as having ‘street smarts’— as if to say, “oh, they really know their way around blah blah.” When in truth the only thing they really know is their way around the block,- the restaurants, bars, clubs, boutiques.
However, the Dardenne brothers know better, they know exactly how to get you to think over here, not over there, not above ground, but below where you’ll see the roots, minerals and all.
In L’ Enfant the center point is a very young couple, kids actually, who have a baby.
The Boyfriend works the streets, not hustling, just trying to make a buck the only way growing up on the streets can teach, the non-legit type. Social maturation remains buried in a psychological location east of Eden. What you have to understand is that these kids who grow up on the streets are quick minded, they have to be to survive. The drawback for most of them is that childhood tendencies linger, the absence of adult supervision stunts their growth; and they’re the last to know this inconvenient truth.
The arrival of the baby creates a paradigm shift, the couple secure a tiny apartment, and the idea of real work becomes the subject.
One problem: people don’t change overnight, especially ones featured in a Dardenne Film. The Boyfriend is remiss of responsibility, the baby’s cute, but......... street smarts resume and he concocts what he thinks is the best laid plan.
Remember that saying?- ‘The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.’

“You died on a Saturday morning. And I had you placed here under our tree. And I had that house of your father's bulldozed to the ground. Momma always said dyin' was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't. Little Forrest, he's doing just fine. About to start school again soon. I make his breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. I make sure he combs his hair and brushes his teeth every day. Teaching him how to play ping-pong. He's really good. We fish a lot. And every night, we read a book. He's so smart, Jenny. You'd be so proud of him. I am. He, uh, wrote a letter, and he says I can't read it. I'm not supposed to, so I'll just leave it here for you. Jenny, I don't know if Momma was right or if, if it's Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time. I miss you, Jenny. If there's anything you need, I won't be far away.” Forrest Gump - 1994 - Director: Robert Zemeckis
