MOST RECENT

The House on Sorority Row (1983): The House on Sorority Row is one of those better than expected slasher films. It’s well made, focuses on a nice distaff approach (without making every character a sexpot), has some nice kills, and—most of all—a pretty intriguing mystery behind the whole thing. Unsurprisingly, the film focuses on a group of sorority sisters, an ill-fated prank, and the violent aftermath of said prank. Most of that setup probably seems typical of many other films but House takes a little more time than most setting things up. The prank sequence isn’t until about 1/3 of the way through which gives things a little breathing room and allows for more of a construction of the dynamic between the sisters and their cruel house mother. Once things go south, the remainder of the film is a fast-paced kill fest where an unknown assailant picks off the sisters, one-by-one. Director #markrosman constructs a professional looking film that is well paced, well shot, and features some memorable music. Performances are fine for this sort of thing with only the lovely @eileendavidsonofficial making any kind of strong impression in an overall way. #loiskelsohunt might have been better had she not been dubbed by another actress—with a deeper voice than Hunt could muster. Final girl #katemcneil is fine here but doesn’t make much of an impression. She isn’t bad by any means (no one is, really) but Davidson outshines here easily. Rosman—deciding things weren’t violent enough—added plenty of “impact shots” that add some nice gory touches to the deaths and, while they aren’t going to shock any gorehounds, the results are still pretty rad (a throat slitting with a hammer’s claw is particularly memorable). The finale of the film is creepy as hell with some fun hallucinogenic imagery, a nice stalk and slash, and an ambiguous climax (surprise, surprise). All in all, this is one of the better slasher films from the period with strong pacing, a nice mystery, and some efficient death scenes. I’d say it’s a must-see for slasher fans and a definite recommend for more casual horror goers. #movie_mattinee @oscarwatchpod @samenightmovie

The Wild Pear Tree - Ahlat Ağacı
Dir. by Nuri Bilge Ceylan (2018)

Vizyon'a girince izlemelisiniz mutlaka. Destek verelim güzel projelere.❤🇹🇷

“She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” / 1949 / “The army is always the same. The sun and the moon change, but the army knows no seasons.”

Seijun Suzuki - Born Under Crossed Stars (Akutarō den: Warui hoshi no shita demo) (1965)

Like The Incorrigible from 1963 this is another adaptation of a Kon Toko novel, and there are similarities between the two films. This one is set some years later around the late 1920s, and although it doesn't share the same characters it does share the same actors in similar roles.
You can tell that Suzuki takes a more playful approach to this film, which again covers the sexual and personal growth of a young man with some cool directorial flourishes with fast cuts and beautiful framing, although not as striking as in The Incorrigible.
The plot is the usual, but a good bit of sex is added into the mix here with Yumiko Nogawa playing a very forward daughter of a pawn broker who takes our protagonist down a dodgy path. A fun little film and probably the second best of the Arrow set after The Incorrigible. (3.5/5)

MOVIE REVIEW: Independent slice-of-life character sketches are more common than the cold these days. Though #MeasureOfAMan brings nothing new to the table in terms of its story or themes and is rather formulaic, we still found ourselves engaged throughout its runtime thanks to the wonderful performances by #BlakeCooper, #BeauKnapp, #DonaldSutherland, and #JudyGreer. It has a sweet story and an interesting-but-sometimes-muddled message. We root for the main character (Cooper) to overcome his issues with his family, his seasonal job/employer, his bully, and with himself. It's an enjoyable summertime coming-of-age drama that deals with body image and bullying. Our rating: 7.5/10! #moviereview #lololovesfilms #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #clairemont #2018movies #movieoftheday #MeasureOfAManMovie #LukeWilson #LukeBenward #SamKeeley #LianaLiberato #DanielleRoseRussell
