Happy birthday—or completion day, rather—to Jules Verne’s 1870 oceanic sci-fi classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The book first appeared in serial form in the French periodical Magasin d’Éducation et de Récréation from March 20, 1869 - June 20, 1870.
Interesting fact: the “leagues” refer to the distance traveled under the sea, not a depth, as 20,000 leagues (4 kilometers in a league) equates to about twice the circumference of the Earth. The Nautilus got around!
The above is a theatrical release poster for the 1954 Disney Technicolor film adaptation, which I loved as a kid. It was the first science fiction film shot in CinemaScope.
