Oct. 27, 1972: Love-struck mimes Robert Shields and Lorene Yarnell came together in front of 1,200 onlookers gathered in Union Square for a ceremony like no other in San Francisco history. The Chronicle described the scene: “Naturally the couple said nothing during the brief noon-hour ceremony. They crossed flowers and at the climatic moment of pantomime, Shields assumed a graceful fencer’s stance and placed the gold band onto the elegantly extended hand of Miss Yarnell. ... They kissed and hugged their way through the crowd to a waiting vintage Rolls-Royce, and departed in silent style.” 📷: Don Lau

Oct. 6, 1967: Fifty years ago this week, Haight-Ashbury residents were ready to bury the counterculture movement that had come to define the neighborhood and the city itself. With the classic Psychedelic Shop set to close, store owner Ron Thelin led a mini-movement to throw a proper “Death of the Hippies” funeral and three-day celebration. “The festivities as usual will be unplanned and freewheeling,” the hippie spokesman told The Chronicle, “but will culminate Sunday with a funeral procession complete with a symbolic casket to be borne through the Haight-Ashbury.” 📷: Peter Breinig

March 1956: Speeches and band music were the order of the day inside what was then known as the Waldo Tunnel. Outside, a cannon boomed, jet fighters swooped down and an Army tank powered around. March 22, 1957: It was the most powerful earthquake to hit San Francisco since 1906, but it’s a foggy memory 60 years later. On the morning of March 22, the ground started shaking. Several small tremors came in waves, signaling something bigger. At 11:44 a.m., screams rang out and people took cover. One thought shot across the mind of thousands: Was this the Big One? “A distant, awesome rumble tightened throats with fear,” read the story in The Chronicle the next day. “The sound was followed in an instant by a twisting, jarring, side-rolling motion that caused skyscrapers in downtown San Francisco to sway visibly. People ran into the streets, some sobbing hysterically.” 📷: Duke Downey, Barney Peterson
