Here's some congenital heart defect knowledge for y'all!.
💉Dx: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) = underdevelopment of the left side of the heart which results in a hypoplastic left ventricle and aortic atresia (absent structure)
- Profound shock will occur if PDA closes
- Difficulty breathing
💉Tx: Prostaglandin E1 (PGE) is given to keep the PDA open. Surgical management will be needed a few days after birth known as the Norwood Procedure which consists of a 3 step process.
1. BT shunt (neonatal repair) - shunt connects aorta to the pulmonary arteries
2. Glenn procedure (at 6 months) - SVC is connected to the pulmonary artery
3. Fontan procedure (at 3-4 years) - IVC is connected to the pulmonary artery
