In the USA, the #MaternalMortality Rate of Black Women is 3.4 times that of White Women (43.5 vs. 12.7 per 100,000 live births).
Reference, www.CDC.gov
Let that marinate for several moments.
In the richest country on the planet, where we spend more on healthcare than any other industrialized nation, BLACK WOMEN are more than THREE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE AS A RESULT OF PREGNANCY/CHILDBIRTH.
This discrepancy does not resolve with improved socioeconomic status. Meaning that Black women of means still have a higher rate of dying during pregnancy/childbirth, than their White counterparts.
There are many reasons for this:
1. Access to care
2. Discriminatory Practices of Healthcare Institutions and Practitioners
3. Inadequate education of Patients of Color by Healthcare Providers
4. Poverty
5. Institutionalized Racism/White Supremacy *
And if you talk to Physicians of color, including myself, they will tell you that discrimination and inadequate access to care has not evaded them because of their education or socioeconomic status.
*
But we are going to hash this out and I am going to tell you the steps I take for myself, and my patients, to balance the odds to be forever in your favor in regards to health care, access and resources.

Dear #youngladywatching, this is advice from my 20 something year old self (I tweeted this 5 years ago). I was in the thick of studying in med school. If I know nothing, this one thing remains true: “A lifetime of settling is tragic.” Please do not ignore that yearning! You owe it to yourself to at least try! And with technology, you have the majority of resources you need right at your fingertips. Use them, use them, USE THEM!!! #WednesdayWisdom #Timehop #BlackGirlMagic #MagicalBlackGirl #FemaleDoc #MinorityDoctors #MinorityWomenInMedicine #BeTheFace #BeTheChange #LittleGirlWatching #YoungLadyWatching #ShareYourTruth

#YoungLadyWatching

In most of my FB talks, this little girl on the wall is either directly over my shoulder or across from me, and that is by design. She motivates my words and inspires me, always.

She also reminds me of where I was and what my aspirations had been, when I found her at a college street fair in the early 1990s.

So when @drlaurenpowell and @docinmypark put up a flare asking for posts of docs with the tag #YoungLadyWatching, I knew I had to support.

Nearly four years ago, my life was irrevocably changed when I was diagnosed with MS and everything around, and within me, derailed and fell apart. I was faced with an unexpected reality that the nine years of surgical training, and everything that I did before and after, would be drastically different than what I had envisioned for myself and my family.

And thank GOD for that.

That diagnosis restored my humility, purpose and focus.
I remembered that my objective was to be of service, which had often been pushed aside by long call hours, administrative duties and just ‘life’. It caused me to take a step back and prioritize my life and family, things that had been relegated to secondary so that I could pursue ‘My Dreams’. What has never eluded me is that the young folks, women of color, in particular, are watching, searching and in great need. Our job, even as we climb the ladder of success, is to always stand beside those who are finding their way and assist in every way we can. That is the entire movement of #YoungLadyWatching, and I am here for every moment of that cause.

Well done, Docs.

Dear #youngladywatching, this is the look on your face when you and your Bestie of over 25 years BOTH defy the statistics to become DOCTORS! You see @drbarbiej and I tell this same story to all of our family and friends of how we were failed by our small town education system in 8th grade and both had to TEACH math to our counterparts because we had a substitute teacher the entire year. Then when we arrived to high school and took honors algebra, we failed that first test MISERABLY!! 😭😭 From there, we studied after school AND on weekends to eventually to overcome what wouldn’t be the last of various challenges coming from a substandard educational background. We pushed through and YOU WILL TOO! Also, ATL followers, do me a favor and head over to @drlaurenpowell and @docinmypark’s pages to FOLLOW and find out how you can be a part of this amazing opportunity they’re offering!! #TheDoctorBesties #FBF #MD #DDS #BestOfBothWorlds #BlackGirlMagic #ForTheCulture #OvercomingTheOdds

It wasn’t too long ago but I’m still gonna throw it back! Not often do you meet people with warm souls and brilliant minds. I’m grateful to have met this sister in medicine and co-creator of #youngladywatching. Thank you @drlaurenpowell and @docinmypark for opening up this discussion that I’ve not seen anywhere. Your impact in these last few days have probably touched and inspired more people than you’ll ever know. This movement reminds me of @ijessewilliams’ quote: “Just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real.” I cannot WAIT to see more stories and I’m thankful on this Thursday for the vision!! #BlackGirlMagic #MagicalBlackGirl #FemaleDoc #MinorityDoctors #MinorityWomenInMedicine #BeTheFace #BeTheChange #LittleGirlWatching #YoungLadyWatching #ShareYourTruth #DocsWhoSlay #ForTheCulture

Dear #youngladywatching, my truth is that I wasn’t one of the “pretty” girls growing up. But to be honest, I never placed value on any of that. I told myself in the 6th grade that I’d rather be respected for my brain than wanted for my face or body. With that mindset, I was able to focus on where I wanted to be in life and “Go For Gold” (s/o to @lovealexisley). I knew early on that I wanted to go to medical school to become a doctor. But plan b (getting my MPH so I could get a job just in case I didn’t get into med school) and fear (putting off taking MCAT as long as I could) made my journey to Medicine a little less traditional. However, I knew for SURE that I was absolutely not living up to my true potential working a desk job at a university. I gathered fear into my bags, stepped out on faith, and headed to study abroad. Morals of the story are focus on YOU, it’s NEVER too late to get your dream, AND take the fear with you!! Pic above is from my surgery rotation 3rd year (s/o to all the surgeons out there). #BlackGirlMagic #MagicalBlackGirl #FemaleDoc #MinorityDoctors #MinorityWomenInMedicine #BeTheFace #BeTheChange #LittleGirlWatching #ShareYourTruth #WCE #WCW

“Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have.” @oprah What’s my truth you ask? The fact that my dreams have always been overzealous. That I dreamt a dream that almost didn’t come true. That my dream paralleled the Disney movie Moana and made me question, “Why me? Why THIS dream?” Obtaining my dream involved me leaving all I ever knew for all I’ve ever wanted. MD. Nothing. NO THING about it was easy. Countless times it would’ve been easier to just quit and give up. I know for SURE I’ve cried an ocean of tears along this path. But my why? My why is my ancestors. My why is my family and friends who believed in me when I didn’t always believe in myself. My why is the young women who DREAM HARD and DO HARDER! Was I the smartest? Nah. The most prepared? Nope? But the most RESILIENT? I’d bet it all to say I was! So my truth is for the believers out there who have this thing, this calling that won’t let them rest or wonder. S/O to @drlaurenpowell and @docinmypark for the inspiration to post!!! We are fire in the winter my loves!!! 📸: @pureblackphotos #ShareYourTruth #BlackGirlMagic #MagicalBlackGirl #FemaleDoc #MinorityDoctors #MinorityWomenInMedicine #BeTheFace #BeTheChange #LittleGirlWatching #YoungLadyWatching #BePureBlack

I saved this post for the last day of my #NewYear2018 post bc this is what stumps most people in terms of progress. Even if you don’t admit it, most folks who don’t ‘progress’ fear rejection, dismissal and ridicule by those around them, including, and most importantly, themselves.
This is the greatest hurdle and this fear really never goes away. Your job is to try and act, despite the fear and ridicule.
What do you really have to lose vs. the tremendous gain that is in store for you??
*
Folks will always have judgement, opinion and suggestions.
But the reality is that sometimes you must be willing to do it alone, without someone else co-signing/approving/assisting.
The great things you do in this life will often be alone, without a reference or guidebook.
The great sh*t is always frightening, but you’ve got this.
*
Cheers to your journey🥂
Feel free to keep me posted on your progress.
I’m rooting for you.

You already know that you, or someone else, can change the entire energy of a room with your ‘vibe’. So imagine what can happen when you welcome a positive or negative being into your world/team/life.
Be selfish and bullish in protecting your inner circle and those who have direct influence on the trajectory of your life.
You deserve the best.
Be a bully for your life.
See you tomorrow.
Cheers 🥂

Not saying that you have to jot down specific dates, immediately, but at least create an idea in your mind of what you envision for yourself, your life...your future.
Can you see your future self? Your surroundings?? Your accomplishments???
*
As a high school student, in undergrad, med school and beyond, I constantly visualized my future and built a plan to bring it into existence. And when I came across a road block, or a nonbeliever, I maneuvered around it or removed that negativity from my life.
**
Start plotting out an agenda...vision board...plan of action.
Be patient with yourself and your approach, but give yourself tasks, deadlines, obligations to commit, perhaps even a contract with yourself.
***
Most importantly, believe in yourself and your vision, even if, and especially if you are the only one.
Cheers 🥂
See you tomorrow.

Side eye
Petty behavior
Grudges
Payback
My nonproductive behavior is down 75%...and I’m still mad petty. I’m working on it. Are you?? All of that negative behavior is stealing from your time, creativity, and most of all, your spirit.

Now, this doesn’t mean that you let others walk all over you.
It means, if folks are snide, noncommittal, lazy, unreliable; take notes and leave them alone.

Forget about paybacks, grudges, etc... Learn from the experience and MOVE ON.
Many times we cycle back through drama because we either haven’t learned the lesson or we don’t want to move on.
Often time there is security in the mayhem...bc it’s the sh*t you know.
But I guarantee you, there is no growth there.

Figure out your story and make adjustments, as needed.
See you tomorrow.

Cheers 🥂

Good Evening, All.
In your pursuit to create and/or fulfill your life’s passions, please remember that you are the focal point of action for any and all motivating, and activating, forces that lead you down the road to success.
As an advisor to students, physicians in-training, as well as those in practice, I often see a desire or willingness for folks to place failure/stagnation at the feet of some other person.
Leadership and excellence require self critique and a willingness to start within, regarding education, improvement and analysis.
Plus, once your fellow teammates know that your expectations start with yourself, you will gain their respect and trust; both of which are essential to growth and success.
Take control.
Be responsible for your path to success.
Be an expert in navigating your life and passions.
Cheers 🥂
See you tomorrow💪🏽

OK, first thing, and I just realized this, I’m kind of obsessed with caterpillars. First of all they are MFin magnificent, all by their lonesome, and then they give life to this unbelievably exquisite whole other being, the butterfly.
They bring me joy because they are completely consumed with just their every day existence, just loving who they are and then BAM!, they get to experience life in this whole other way...in the air, dipping into flowers and coming out dripping in pollen and new life....just Wow.
For many, many years I lost track, and pretty much ignored, what brought me joy; too caught up in trying to check boxes on my ‘to do’ list.
Please take time to enjoy the abundance around you and experience every bit of life and dip your toes in the decadence around you. In the end that is really what matters...not things, but experiences, relationships...the good stuff.
Take time.
Take it all in.
Figure out what brings your joy and go do that sh*t.
See you tomorrow.
Cheers 🥂 .

And OF COURSE, my number one ALL TIME FAVORITE MOMENT OF 2017 was graduating with that MD!!! S/O to all my family who traveled from near and far to give me my roses while I can still smell them! I ran the marathon but they cheered me on the ENTIRE TIME with encouragement and stood proudly at the finish line. All in all, my 2017 was more perfect than not. I will celebrate one last time and press forward tomorrow as if nothing ever happened. Because greatness is a CONTINUOUS process!! #OnToTheNextDream #DreamBigger #ForTheCulture #HappyNewYear

Top moment #2 of 2017: medical mission trip to Lagos, Nigeria with the @lolmission organization!! We were able to treat and educate over 1,000 patients during our time there!! I have NEVER been welcomed like this ANYWHERE! The culture is rich! The food so yummy! S/O to jollof rice! All this time I knew I want to do medical mission work to change lives when they’re the ones who changed me. I will FOREVER be grateful for this experience and can’t wait to go back!! #LOLMission #Lagos #Nigeria #DoctorsWithoutBorders #Fulfillment

I’ve been reflecting on my life and 2017, in particular, and realize that there have been many healthy and unhealthy patterns that need to be expounded upon and/or remedied.
*
So here we are with my actions for 2018...
Let me know what you have planned...
***
What we definitely gon’ do...
1. Water. Water. Water.
Haven’t been getting enough and feel better when I do.
2. Yoga.
Ditto, as above.
Clarity of mind, spirit and body.
3. Writing out my intentions and keep myself accountable.
4. Only take actions that are in alignment with my abilities, bring myself and others joy, and that will be of service.
5. Traveling abroad four times in 2018. Already fell short of doing a proper vacation in January. Sorry to my hubbs for that one. Will absolutely rectify that issue for the remainder of the year.
***
Now what we NOT gon’ do....
1. Say yes, when it is not my desire nor duty
2. Be accountable for the actions of others. You a grown up, child, professional, etc...Act like it and get your sh*t together.
3. RECIPROCITY.
No longer will I extend my time, hand, support, body, mind, etc..., for those who cannot muster up the time to show an iota of concern, nor intention, to do the same. Sayonara.
3. Keep dealing with folks who suck every bit of energy and desire to continue to breath vital air, out of me. 5, 4, 3, 2...your time is up.
Long duration of a relationship, or any other preconceived thoughts of obligation be damned. No mas. Blessings for your journey. Live long and prosper, but not on my dime/time/soul. I have no idea how much time, or quality of life, I have left on this Earth and I will no longer spend it on folks who could give less than two sh*ts about the well being of myself or my family. Shoo fly, shoo.
*
*Write out your intentions
**Hold yourself and others accountable
***Make 2018 your best year yet
