Here are some basic characteristics of a healthy chicken:-
▪Erect stance with head and tail elevated.
▪Bright red combs and wattles.
▪Brightly coloured and alert eyes.
▪Clean nostrils, without any mucus discharges from them.
▪Smooth, neat and clean feathers. Some healthy hens don't have neat feathers because of molting or over mating by roosters.
▪Joints that are cool and smooth to the touch, not swollen.
▪Weight that is typical for the type and age of the birds. For example, a good layer weighs between 1.6-2.5kg......
▪Powerful movement when struggling.
▪Scales on the legs and feat are clean and waxy in appearance.
▪Normal droppings with black and white parts. Sometimes droppings look and smell different but are still under the normal category.
▪Healthy birds eat and drink water frequently with no signs of respiratory diseases.
▪Colour of the skin is characterised for the breed and strain of the bird as well as the age and state of production.
▪Roosters will crow and mate with hens.
▪Hens lay eggs and can only stop when they are old, taking a break, molting or broody.
▪A healthy bird is active.
▪Make normal sounds and movements.......
