Coimbatore style Chicken Biryani, mum's style pepper chicken curry(recipe on the blog)and mutton curry, Karaikudi style. #sundaylunch
As a young new bride, I stepped foot in my in laws' home in Coimbatore for the first time. The one thing I was not, I was not shy. My world looked different, all of a sudden. However, I had many hands welcoming me eagerly. Their laughs and that accent was contagious. I had to dress a bit differently, which was OK, because I enjoyed a saree here and there, and the bindi on my forehead, I adored. And I loved impressing.
Every morning my father in law would give me fresh coconut water from his darling coconut trees, show me almond trees and his vegetable patch. And my mum in law and her sister taught me how to make their style of biryani. I learnt well, and they seemed pleased. The food was so different from what I'd eaten back at my parents. It was three shades spicier and there was something about it that I absolutely fell in love with. A whole new door of food opened. I scribbled as much as I could. We left 10 days later to come to US with tears and few memories.
Now, when I make a Coimbatore feast, my heart and soul travels back to the days I stood by the stove intently seeing how they created the magic, and they even let me eat as they cooked, just like my mom:). Both Bangalore and Coimbatore meals are in my comfort zone nowadays.
Tell me about your comfort zone food. Would love to know.
