Happy Sun Stands Still Day! (It actually happened at 1124pm last night in Chicago.) The summer solstice also known as midsummer, occurs when a planet's rotational axis, or geographic pole on either its northern or its southern hemisphere, is most inclined toward the star that it orbits. On the summer solstice, Earth's maximumaxial tilt toward the Sun is 23.44°. (Likewise, the Sun's declination from the celestial equator is +23.44° in the Northern Sky and −23.44° in the Southern Sky.) This happens twice each year (once in each hemisphere), when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the north or south pole.
On the exact moment of the June Solstice, the Sun is directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer. This is the northernmost the Sun can get, as seen from Earth.
Great Charter and great sailing today Billy and Lauren celebrated an anniversary while Nick and Amy shared birthdays.!the city diverted the storm all around us but we did manage to get hit with a 32 mile an hour wind which made for great sailing. Reefed the jib and Main and we were still hauling.
The 118ft schooner rigged yacht, 'Zaca' built in 1930 and acquired in 1946 by Errol Flynn. Zaca is featured prominently in the 1947 Orson Welles film The Lady from Shanghai. A documentary short film "Cruise Of The Zaca" which features Errol Flynn aboard his vessel was made in 1952 and has been shown on the Turner Classic Movies TV channel. Flynn owned the yacht until his death in 1959. I had the pleasure of seeing the reproduction of this vessel being worked on in Grenada in 2008. The crew were sanding and varnishing the wooden masts.
A happy 108th birthday to one of my favorite adventurers. Both onscreen and off. 'There is nothing like lying flat on your back on the deck, alone except for the helmsman aft at the wheel, silence except for the lapping of the sea against the side of the ship. At that time you can be equal to Ulysses and brother to him.' -Errol Flynn
