“I travel far, just to see myself in a different place, doing different things, within a different culture.” —
While in Thailand, I was fortunate enough to spend a day at Elephant Nature Park. I learned about how these elephants were rescued from terrible conditions, fed them, observed their interactions with other elephants and the world around them, and bathed them. Many people travel to Thailand and love to take pictures riding these beautiful creatures, but here I learned how an elephant’s spirit is broken to enable you to do that; how they are forced to breed when they are no longer useful as a tourist spectacle; how their backs have broken under the weight of carrying people. If you are interested in meeting elephants during your travels, my best advice is to do your research and ensure you are visiting a place that is ethical.
