Best known for their pizza and crab cakes, a day like today calls for a bowl of gazpacho from Jake’s & Cooper’s. 😅🍅🥑🦀Crab and avocado plus a basil garnish make a refreshing dish...plus you’ll have a well-curated list of wines to choose from. 🍷 .
@brucecooperjakes has a great story behind their success. After experiencing success and expansion on Main Street in Manayunk, they were hit with a flood in 2016 that caused a total shut down. From floating refrigerators and crumbling sidewalk, they truly had to start from scratch but came back better than ever. 👏We love having their restaurant as part of the Manayunk community. 🍕(And for more details of their very impressive story, Google @phillyinsider’s 2017 profile of Bruce Cooper on Philly.com!)

Fun 🍕 Fact: While Franzone's originally started out making cheesesteaks in 1955, they're now best known for their zas. The location in Manayunk is owned by Charles Franzone, the 3rd generation of the family to operate their family-style pizza joints. 🍽
Charles grew up doing homework at the family's Conshohocken location, and started his own Manayunk location in 2016 when he spotted that the perfect location was available. Their signature sweet sauce recipe was developed by Charles' great-grandmother back when the original Franzone’s location was called DeJohn’s Steaks. 🍅
Because of its sweetness, the sauce is spiraled on top of the pie to compliment the homemade dough and cheese blend. Pizza is sold by the pie or by the slice, and they’ve got outdoor seating to accompany their good food.

Grateful for this travel buddy and teammate who is exploring Philadelphia and lots of other amazing cities with me this summer! Today we walked almost 10 miles west to east in Philly and balanced it out by eating our weight in local foods! We also went of a food tour of Chestnut Hill with @chewphilly food tours and had the best time eating gluten free treats and admiring all the European architecture. It was such a gem! We also found Diego’s parent’s old apartment (which is in what is now the Gayborhood! #pride ) and explored Elfreth’s Alley—the oldest continually inhabited street in the US! Okay enough of me nerding out over history/travel. Gotta love traveling!

It’s officially summer, which means Philadelphians will be heading to the shore and indulging in Salt Water Taffy. 🍬
SWT was actually invented at the Jersey Shore in Atlantic City by Bradley's Candy Store in 1883. The story goes that his entire stock of taffy was soaked by seawater, and he joked that it had become Salt Water Taffy, (although, of course, there’s no real salt water or even salt in most taffy). 🍭
Shriver's is the oldest and longest running business in Ocean City, producing taffy since William Shriver's ownership in 1898. Sold in 1957 to Philadelphia business owners, Shriver’s is still a family-run operation, in it's 3rd generation of family ownership. Modern technology allows confectioners to produce about 1,000 pieces of taffy a minute, and Shriver's
uses machines made in England to wrap 400-600 pieces a minute. In the video, they're brushing on a white powder, which is a dusting starch to keep the taffy from sticking. Their kitchen is open for customers to watch the taffy being produced, and they’re the only shop in Ocean City that produces their own taffy. 🏖

The arrival of the Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Railroad in 1854 transformed the village into a beguiling summer retreat. Developers such as Charles Taylor and Samuel H. Austin and the summer residents they attracted hired noted Philadelphia architects for their ample dwellings. At the same time, Samuel Austin accommodated workers within the community by building homes for them on Devon Street and Germantown Avenue. In the early 1880s, the astute planning of Henry Howard Houston capitalized on the extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad to Chestnut Hill and created in the community’s western portions a planned residential and social community of extraordinary quality.
