“When my 18-year-old son was diagnosed with autism at three, I started to take up short courses and alternative therapy so I could help him cope, especially during meltdowns. When I made the choice to resign from my job and take care of him, I also started to pursue a Specialist Diploma in Teaching and Supporting Children with Special Needs. That’s when I was inspired to start My Inspiring Journey (MIJ) Special Education Hub.
As an educator and a mother of an autistic child, my fulfilment comes from teaching my students, rather than being the owner of MIJ. Whenever parents tell me that their child is making progress, I share their pride and joy. Even if it’s the slightest improvement!
One challenge we face is the limited number of training personnel. It’s not easy to find vibrant, dedicated individuals who are truly passionate to teach students with special needs, and I would rather have quality than quantity. Parents don’t see me as a business owner, but as another parent who empathises with them and understands them. That’s what keeps me motivated to keep improving our school especially the quality of our teachers and the programs that we provide.” Faraliza Zainal is the Director of Learning & Development, and founder of My Inspiring Journey (MIJ) Special Education Hub, an institution tailored to individuals with learning differences. A believer of lifelong learning, she is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Special Needs Educational & Additional Learning Needs.
