17 Best Songs of 2017 (so far)
#12 - "3am (Pull Up)" by Charli XCX feat. MØ
Charli XCX is one of pop music's best kept secrets. Yes, the UK born pop star had a top 10 hit in 2014 with "Boom Clap" and featured on Iggy Azalea's monster hit "Fancy" (which, frankly, she should get all the credit for), but in the States most people don't know her name or the majority of her songs. This is a real shame because, as I already indicated, Charli XCX is enormously talented. "3am (Pull Up)," from her 2017 mixtape "Number 1 Angel," is a perfect representation of Charli's pop sensibilities. A bubblegum synth track laid over a tropical house beat, "3am" is a snarky kiss-off to an ex that knows just what to say in the middle of the night when emotions are high and reasoning is low. Like most of Charli's musical catalog, the lyrics have both bite and emotional heft, making them instantly relatable. As for the vocals, Charli's half-squeaky, half-soulful voice is reminiscent of early Madonna, while her delightfully bratty disposition can be compared to P!nk. Overall, "3am" is a gem of a pop song. The hook is killer, the beat is danceable, and Charli remains as unique and talented as ever. Give it a spin!
Best lyric: It's 3 am and you are calling / Go fuck yourself, don't say you're sorry
