At the age of 21, Charlie Young receives the job of a lifetime when he is hired as President Bartlet's Personal Aide. Of all the numbers on the Enneagram, I think Charlie most resembles a Type 9.
If I had to pick one word to describe Charlie's character throughout the course of the show, it would be "steady." As the President's Personal Aid, Charlie has the unfortunate task of making the Present's early morning wake-up calls or securing the ideal carving knife for Barlet's Thanksgiving meal. No matter how unglamorous or trivial the task, Charlie never complains, and goes above and beyond to execute whatever is asked of him. •
Charlie's remarkable work ethic leads me to believe he's probably a 9w1 (though he we see him engage conflict throughout the series, so he obviously has access to his 9w8 side as well). •
Like all healthy 9s, Charlie is awake to himself and fully present in the world around him. He is driven and hardworking (health for 9s is growing in the direction of Type 3). Known as the "peacemakers" of the Enneagram, 9s dislike conflict more than any other Type. However, a healthy 9 recognizes that true inner peace cannot be achieved without some kind of conflict. At their best, 9s are patient, flexible, accepting, relaxed, unself-conscious, agreeable, content, comforting, and idealizing. 💛
