Design No. 440: Chapel
atelier ying, nyc.
I actually have quite a few chapel designs that are not uploaded yet... but digging in to a very well made plate of rice noodles after drawing.
Jesus said, "... I am the Way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me ...". One interpretation of this is that once you have it attained a way of being (and therefore a way of living) that reflects this then you are with God and God is with you. That way is an unoffended life. A non-judgmental one. It is an existence that is an easy yoke, a light burden, an idyllic existence. The understanding of this (and it is great enough to be an end result and a goal in itself) is the inspiration for this design. I would suggest that you don't consider that the space is just a volume that describes a quarter circle but that instead you imagine standing inside the space and touching the walls of the single corner, and that instead of standing at this corner and looking outwards, keep looking towards the corner and continue to feel the space. In Christian life we can come in contact with and meet ourselves as we meet God, this attempts to remind us of that possibility (perhaps from the standpoint of a very crude architecture). On top and at an angle hangs a church bell, adapted from John Hejduk's chapel, pointed towards the corner (to where you're standing), which connects you via a funicular turned into a bell with the roof. The funicular idea & mountain scale is apt for this chapel, borrowed from an Agatha Christie short story of a hotel murder on top of a Swiss mountain, The Erymanthian Boar.
