Made my first RuneQuest character, mostly to learn from doing so I can adequately explain the game to my players. Character generation in RuneQuest is surprisingly detailed, well thought out and easy, so long as you are methodical and can find patience for the poorly organized rules (goes with the old-school territory, I guess). It also seems like the game will have a high incidence of dismemberment. Thank goodness for healing magic, I guess? #runequest #runequest2 #chaosium #dismemberment

The new #RuneQuest #QuickStart from #Chaosium! Anxious to see what's coming for #Glorantha! #TabletopRPG

- I've played some rpgs but always as a player. I think maybe it's time for me to think about a scenario as GM. It definitely is not easy for someone who has never done this before to describe successfully a story and I don't know if I can make it but I have to try because it seems fun! And what rpg could be better to start with than my beloved Cthulu! I just started reading the book and writing down my notes! I believe that I'll be ready after Xmas holidays... @billmilios @evi_sketo team, get ready!

@Regrann from @vintagerpg: River of Cradles, released in 1992, is Avalon Hill’s attempt to collect all the background information from Chaosium’s Prax box sets – Pavis, Big Rubble and Borderlands – into one book. As with other Avalon Hill productions, I find the layout friendlier to my eyes and the Dave Dobyski maps to be lovely. As a replacement for those boxes, though, it is wanting. ¶ There is only one scenario included – Troubled Waters – which takes place along the length of the Zola Fel river as the players attempt to stem an infestation of gorp – RuneQuest’s chaotic answer to the gelatinous cube of D&D fame. It is a travelogue adventure, as much concerned with introducing players to the river valley and its inhabitants as it is providing them with danger and derring-do. It is good, but it simply can’t match the weight of all the scenarios from the earlier boxes, especially the epic campaign in Borderlands, which casts the PCs as a civilizing force for an entire region. You have to appreciate the chutzpa of an adventure that goes all in against giant, acidic Jell-O molds, though.¶ It is worth noting that even though this book is inferior to the Chaosium boxes, it and every other supplement covering the same ground commands a high price for collectors. Just look up the Gloranthan Classics reprint of Pavis and Borderlands on Amazon if you want to have a heart attack… ¶ #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #ADnD #DandD #AdvancedDungeonsAndDragons #RPG #TabletopRPG #roleplayinggame #Chaosium #Glorantha #Prax #RuneQuest #Pavis #1992 #RiverofCradles #AvalonHill #Gorp #TroubleWaters #ZolaFel #BigRubble #Borderlands #Raus #DaveDobyski #GloranthanClassics

Sun County is a supplement for Avalon Hill’s third edition RuneQuest from 1992. ¶ There is a lot to dislike about the Avalon Hill version of the game – their overriding desire for RuneQuest to be campaign setting agnostic and an obsession with over-complicating everything – but I still have a fondness for it. The layout is crisp and clean, with art that is, if not fantastic, perhaps more consistent than that in the Chaosium books. I love Dave Dobyski’s maps. Perhaps most importantly, their sourcebooks like Dorastor and Sun County explored regions of Glorantha previously mentioned but mostly left undeveloped. ¶ Sun County lies along the Zola Fel river, directly south of Pavis. A theocratic domain, it is ruled by worshippers of Yelmalio, the god of the Sun Dome, and maintains a rigorous and xenophobic character. Outsiders are not welcome in Sun County, but the region’s love of gold attracts adventurers nonetheless. The Yelmalions are a contrast to the morally permissive Lunar Empire officials that administrate Prax and the continued presence of the sun worshippers is tolerated because of prowess of the Sun Dome Templars, whose mercenary services are valued throughout the region. ¶ The scenarios presented are some of the best available in RuneQuest 3 and, along with 1993’s Shadows on the Borderlands, form a natural extension of material contained in Chaosium’s Borderlands box set for RuneQuest 2. Yelmalio also represents a great example of the complexity of Glorantha’s religions, as a sun god who is not THE sun god, who hates Darkness, who has a polite rivalry with cultist of Orlanth (the storm god who killed the Yelm, the actual Sun and Yelmalio’s dad) and whose worshippers coexist with the chaos-worshipping Lunars (in Glorantha, chaos is a force of corruption and terror, rightly feared by non-Lunars). The system underneath may be flawed, but as a book delving into more Gloranthan history and culture, Sun County is precious. ¶ #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #ADnD #DandD #AdvancedDungeonsAndDragons #RPG #TabletopRPG #roleplayinggame #Chaosium #Glorantha #Prax #SunCounty #RuneQuest #Pavis #1992 #AvalonHill #Yelm #Yelmalio #Orlanth #LunarEmpire #SunDome #DaveDobyski

Sadly the local game store didn't get in any of the Fallout boardgame (name now on the list to get next printing of it) though they did have some of Chaosium Call of Cthulhu 7th edition RPG books on holiday sale so I got Nameless Horrors and looks like this will go well with Pagan Publishing's book Bumps in the Night (both books set to give non-mythos scares to the players). #horror , #cthulhu , #callofcthulhu , #chaosium , #paganpublishing

Big Rubble: The Deadly City details the ruins of the original city of Pavis, now a dangerous region filled with trolls, elves, the taint of chaos and, most importantly for adventurers, long lost powerful magic artifacts waiting to be claimed by the brave or foolish. ¶ New Pavis is the seat of civilization in Prax so it feels appropriate to the sense of philosophical symmetry present in RuneQuest that it would exist directly next to the Big Rubble, a vast and dangerous area partly contained by massive walls. Officials from the Lunar Empire tightly control access to the Rubble, issuing adventurers permits and taxing or seizing artifacts recovered from the ruins. And yet communities of humans, elves, dwarves and trolls all exist within the Rubble, if not peaceably, then at least grudgingly coexisting outside the occasional raid. ¶ I love the idea of an area of contained wildness, as artificial as it may seem despite the game’s historical justifications for its existence. By walling off the Rubble, the designers created a region of endless danger and mystery where nearly anything can happen, all outside the jurisdiction of civilization (mostly). When PCs enter the Rubble, they willfully enter a place of danger and encourages a lack of restraint. The fact that if things get too hot, a group can theoretically run back to civilization is a curious x-factor I am keen to explore. Will it make my group overly cautious? Or will that safety net, and perhaps the fear of being labeled cowards, encourage increasingly risky behavior? With escape so present, you can push your luck a little bit more than you would in a remote location, right? ¶ #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #ADnD #DandD #AdvancedDungeonsAndDragons #RPG #TabletopRPG #roleplayinggame #Chaosium #Glorantha #Prax #RuneQuest #Pavis #1983 #BigRubble #TheDeadlyCity

RUNEQUEST - LAND OF NINJA
Games Workshop/Avalon Hill/Chaosium
Hardback 1987. 144 pages.

Printed as a "Companion Volume to Runequest Fantasy Roleplay Adventure", Third edition, 4th Volume. Now if that isnt a mouthfull then the fact it has no less than three companies attached to its production makes this a complicated beast.
I dug this out of the shelves after a great conversation with @vintagerpg earlier. Originally printed as just "Ninja" in a box set for third ed runequest, this book bears almost no connection to any other runequest product (core rules aside). However its a very well written and researched product. In feel its more like the first edition of oriental adventures for Ad&d. The amount of extra rules for subjects such as Honour, Family, Martial Arts, Ki and eastern themed Spirit Magic make this a radically different game to Gloranthan or basic runequest. Complete with geography and bestiary its a real shame they didnt put core system and character creation in this book and make it a seperate title. For my money one of the best oriental rpgs ever printed (and yes I have read and played L5R, Bushido, Qin and Sengoku amongst others before you ask). Doesnt feel very "Runequest" but for fans of the genre its a must.
postscript....anyone wanting to read and see more about a whole bunch of Runequest should head on over to @vintagerpg feed .

When I first started digging into RuneQuest a couple years ago, I learned that the reputation of the Pavis: Threshold to Danger box set (and its companion, The Big Rubble – more on that tomorrow) verges on the legendary. ¶ Pavis is the major city in the region of Prax. Its history starts centuries ago, when the God Learners founded the city of Robcradle on the site. Giants living in the Rockwood Mountains far to the north would send their infants down the Zora Fel river in cradles filled with powerful magic, which the God Learners waylaid and plundered at Catchcradle Island. The giants naturally took exception to this and laid waste to Robcradle, founding their own massive city on the site. It was later re-conquered by Pavis, who renamed it in his own honor. The original city changed hands through war many times over the ensuing years, until it was left a ruin, now known as the Big Rubble. Eventually, Dorasar, an exile from the kingdom of Sartar, founded New Pavis outside the walls of the original city. When the Lunar Empire conquered Prax, they also seized Pavis and now use the city as the center of their civilizing influence. ¶ This rich history, and the mix of competing cultures and religions left in its wake, is the backdrop for the majority of RuneQuest’s second edition and has, in some form, been included in most subsequent editions of the game. The box features a detailed, building-by-building guide, numerous important political figures and the classic scenario The Cradle, in which PCs must defend the first giant cradle sent downriver in 700 years. The adventure became so big it wound up crowding out two other scenarios listed on the back of the box. That necessitated Chaosium’s release of Big Rubble later in 1983. ¶ I intend to run all the classic RuneQuest material as my next campaign and I can’t wait to get to Pavis… ¶ #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #ADnD #DandD #AdvancedDungeonsAndDragons #RPG #TabletopRPG #roleplayinggame #Chaosium #Glorantha #Prax #Sartar #RuneQuest #Pavis #1983 #BigRubble #TheCradle #RobCradle #CatchCradleIsland #Dorasar #ThresholdtoDanger

Cults of Prax, by Steve Perrin and Greg Stafford, is a book of deities and, since the RuneQuest system and the world of Glorantha are both intimately connected to the many religions contained within, it is one of the game’s most important books. Prax is both a melting pot and the site of a clash of cultures on an epic scale, so the gods detailed in the book are a cross-section of deities found throughout Glorantha. Several pantheons – those of the native nomad tribes, the invading Lunar Empire, the neighboring Kingdom of Sartar, the city of Pavis and more – all compete for influence in the region. If you play RuneQuest, you will know the names of gods like Orlanth, Humakt, Storm Bull, the Seven Mothers, Lhankor Mhy and Yelmalio very, very well. ¶ Unlike D&D, which features endless deities but few doctrines that matter in terms of the game’s mechanics, the cults are RuneQuest’s foundation. Membership in one of more cults determines not just a character’s culture and beliefs, but many also function as a more organic sort of character class. ¶ In D&D, a book like this would only be of use to Clerics and Paladins, and probably only in expanding the available spells. In RuneQuest, religion IS roleplaying – Cults of Prax is a handbook for how all characters (player and non-player) act, both with members of their own cults and outsiders. Learning these customs and how to navigate them is the soul of the game. ¶ I suspect the centering of the interaction of beliefs on the level of social groups in RuneQuest is a clear antecedent of Planescape and its factions. It is testament to the monumental nature of the book that, even though it was originally released in 1979, it has yet to meet its match in depth and clarity. It is a foundational RPG text (and not just because it might be the first splatbook – correct me if I am wrong in the comments). ¶ #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #ADnD #DandD #AdvancedDungeonsAndDragons #RPG #TabletopRPG #roleplayinggame #Chaosium #Glorantha #CultsofPrax #Prax #Sartar #RuneQuest #Pavis #LunarEmpire #1979 #splatbook

MICHAEL MOORCOCK - ELRIC AT THE END OF TIME : Illustrated by Rodney Matthews. Published by Paper Tiger 1987.

Normally known for their gorgeous art books paper tiger did several 'Alternative' style books back in the 80s and Moorcocks work was perfect for such a project. Printed in beautiful large easy to read font and layered with amazing classic paper tiger artwork by the talented Rodney Matthews. Theres no denying that the guys at GW would have been hugely inspired by such artwork and the cover almost screams Jes Goodwin model to me. I have a growing collection of paper tiger 'coffee table' books and they come in all sorts of odd shapes and sizes which is suitably chaotic. (The fact i order them in a lawfull chronological order brings balance).

Authentic Thaumaturgy is a curious book that surfaced in 1979, published by Chaosium. Penned by P. E. I. Bonewits, the goal of the book was to reimagine the magic systems of roleplaying games through the lens of real-world mysticism and religion (I’ll use Crowley’s “magick” when referring to those systems for clarity). Bonewits, billed on the back cover as the “only academically accredited occultist,” was a prominent real-world druid. ¶ The results are interesting. Historical magickal systems, particularly those from Western traditions, are just that: systems. They function in a way that is very similar to roleplaying magic – there are rules and processes to follow in order to produce a specific supernatural effect. And, while most of D&D’s magic springs forth from the writing of Jack Vance, Gygax was certainly no stranger to Western occultism – the Dungeon Master’s Guide uses a number of traditional magick circles as illustrations and many of the demon and devil names come from the Ars Goetia grimoire, which was compiled in the 17th century. ¶ Much of the book advocates accuracy for accuracy’s sake, which doesn’t really wash for me. RPG magic can be fun without having to reflect real-world magickal practice. In this way, it fits with the early-RPG scene (read: former wargamers) and their obsession with converting the real-world actions into systemized math. Where they were obsessed with the relative speeds of weapons, Bonewits was interested in occult verisimilitude. ¶ Philosophically, though, Bonewits has some interesting contributions. A favorite quote: “It offends my personal intuition to believe, even for a game, that the powers of hatred, fear and destruction would be the equal in spiritual force to those of love, courage and creation.” This and other similar musings challenge many assumptions we make about the abstraction of the world we encounter in RPGs. ¶ #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #ADnD #DandD #AdvancedDungeonsAndDragons #Chaosium #RPG #TabletopRPG #roleplayinggame #AuthenticThaumaturgy #PEIBonewits #Magic #Magick #JackVance #GaryGygax #DungeonMastersGuide #Goetia #Crowley

Had a blast wearing my +2 Suit of Charisma all weekend at #pax. The theme was "1920's Cthulhu academic"-- hardly even a stretch for me! I had prospective customers and players popping over to say hi JUST because of my snappy outfit, so I'm calling it a win. Thanks to my good friend Smitty for the pocketwatch: it really tied the outfit together!!!
