The abandoned buildings of Central State Hospital in Milledgeville (Baldwin County). Opened in 1842 as the Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum, this hospital grew to become the largest insane asylum in the world with its vast campus of more than 200 buildings on 2,000 acres.
The hospital’s growth eventually exceeded maximum capacity with patients outnumbering doctors 100 to 1.
The quality of treatment deteriorated rapidly due to the overcrowding. It is rumored that patients were subjected to cages and straight jackets as well as forced electroshock therapy and lobotomies.
The decaying buildings and surrounding cemeteries, which contain roughly 25,000 unmarked graves of deceased patients, make visiting the campus a haunting experience.
The unknown dead are memorialized in nearby Cedar Lane Cemetery where 2,000 markers have been placed as well as a bronze statue of a guardian angel, which watches over the dead at Central State Hospital.
