The B1 #Centaur is an eight-wheeled armored combat vehicle designed for tactical reconnaissance and racing. It was developed by the consortium of Italian manufacturers Società Consortile Iveco Fiat - Oto Melara (CIO), merged with Leonardo, from 2016. Iveco Fiat was the part in charge of developing the hull and the propulsion systems whereas Oto Melara was responsible for the Development of turrets and weapons systems. Since the first design as a Centauro antitank vehicle, other variants have been made, such as the armored personnel carrier and VBM Freccia infantry combat vehicle.
The vehicle was developed in response to a request from the Italian Army for a panzer with the firepower of the old Leopard 1 tugboat, then in service with the Italian Army, but with greater strategic mobility. The main mission of the Centaur is to protect other lighter chivalry elements by using their good power-to-weight ratio, excellent range and off-track ability (despite having wheels rather than chains), and the control system Computerized shot to accomplish his mission. The Centaur went into production in 1991 for the Italian Army and deliveries were completed in 2006.
The Centauro has been exported to Spain, which acquired 84 Centauro vehicles between 2002 and 2006, and was also exported to Oman, which received 6 Centauro vehicles at the end of 2009.Operational history: Italy:
Centaur of the Italian Army on a patrol by Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina at the IFOR mission, in October 2006.
The Centaur in service with the Italian Army deployed in the former Yugoslavia and Somalia. It was frequently used to escort convoys, control large areas and to patrol roads. Centaur vehicles were also deployed during Operation Antica Babylon, the Italian participation in the Iraq War. During this operation, a troop of Centaurs took part in the second battle for the bridges of Nassiriya destroying a building that hosted enemy snipers. It is currently deployed as part of the UNIFIL forces in Lebanon.
In March 2009, Spain displaced Líbanoun Caballería reconnaissance group to reinforce the Spanish contingent of UNIFIL in Lebanon. ⬇⬇⬇⬇Specifications⬇⬇⬇#armoured #vehicles #historiansunion
