What happens when a lineage of 8 Popes moves into a castle in your town? They rename the town “The Popes New Castle”, or in French, Chateauneuf du Pape.
I love these wines because you can drink them young. You can also age them and let the predominant Grenache grape, evolve and create interesting complex flavors. The reason you can drink them young, is because the vineyards in Cahteauneuf du Paps, are littered with stones. Big and small ones. These stones collect the sun’s heat during the day, and then release the heat in the evening. This process advances the ripening of the grapes.
With the 1998 Clos des Papes, you get dark and red berries, and the two classic Rhone signature flavors of spice and black pepper. Chateauneuf du Pape, like all Rhone wines, pair well with food.
