How can you provide the best possible mental and sexual health care for Indigenous and racialized people and communities? Ask yourself the following:⠀
.⠀
1. What is your level of knowledge and capacity as it relates to offering mental and sexual health care to Black, Indigenous and racialized patients/clients in a culturally competent way?⠀
.⠀
2. What is your level of knowledge and capacity as it relates to the specific mental and sexual health needs of Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities?⠀
.⠀
3. What are steps you can take to boost your personal or institutional capacity to provide the best possible care for Black, Indigenous and racialized people and communities? Are there Black, Indigenous and racialized staff and health care providers in your facility? What is your knowledge of the context in which certain populations have historically experienced sexual and reproductive health care (and control)? How could that change how you present options to your patients/clients and⠀
the language you use?⠀
.⠀
4. Do you proactively assess patients’/clients’ mental and sexual wellness as it relates to the specific risks faced by Black, Indigenous and racialized people and communities because of discrimination, intergenerational trauma, and racism?⠀
.⠀
5. How proactive are you in supporting and/or seeking out resources to ensure your patients/clients have the space and resources to incorporate culture, traditional belief systems, and languages into their health care?⠀
.⠀
6. What kind of resources and/or supports are available in your community for Black, Indigenous and racialized patients/clients?⠀
.⠀

After ZERO consultation with membership and council, the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) Board has unilaterally overturned a passed council motion and is now engaging with Wynne’s bureaucratic Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs). The OMA, under the unelected executive “leadership” of Shawn Whatley and Nadia Alam, is now helping the Ontario Liberals implement #Bill41 -legislation that is harmful for patient care.
Ontario’s doctors deserve an organization that represents their interests and helps to advocate for Ontario’s patients. OMA has just proven again - it is a self-serving bureaucracy. We all need and deserve better. Concerned Ontario Doctors (COD) will continue to speak out against Bill 41 and advocate for our scarce taxpayer dollars to be invested in the essential frontline care provided by doctors and nurses, not wasted on ballooning healthcare bureaucracy.

Please sign and share COD’s petition today:

It’s #heartmonth and we just got our first office AED! What is an AED why is it important?
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a small, lightweight, and portable electronic device that delivers an electric shock through the chest wall of a person whose heart has stopped beating. It is proven to be one of the most important tools in saving the life of someone suffering sudden cardiac arrest.
Sudden cardiac arrest is unpredictable; it can happen anywhere, anytime, at any age, and without any warning. In fact, one occurs every 12 minutes in Canada.
Because all AEDs emit clear voice prompts and most have legible and visual instructions, they can be used by anyone, regardless of age of experience.

Shout out to the Health & Safety Committee and Isabelle in particular for getting us an AED and making our office a safer place to be. ❤️ #lifeatcfhi #aed #heathandsafety #hearthealth #heartandstroke #safetyfirst #worksafety #health #cdnhealth #themoreyouknow #ourstaffrocks

In the context of the #invisibility and a real lack of knowledge and information about #LGBTQ2S lives and health care needs, getting the care one deserves is extremely important. Not only for those individuals needing care, but also for building the capacity of care providers to genuinely provide for the health needs of ALL people. ⠀

As I have said all week and I will say it again... check out the Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Week website for more valuable information about making these connections and getting the health care you deserve. Or I have linked to this information in the bio link. ⠀
