"The Women of DC Comics: A Retrospect" - Day 26: Harley Quinn:
Celebrating her 25th anniversary this year, the character of Harley Quinn was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for the “Batman: The Animated Series” television episode “Joker’s Favor”, premiering in September of 1992 (panel 1 by Bruce Timm). Making her first comic book appearance in Batman Adventures (Vol 1) 12 in 1993 (panel 2), Quinn’s origin story was in Dini and Timm’s one shot graphic novel “The Batman Adventures: Mad Love” from February 1994; psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel falls madly in love with her Arkham Asylum patient, The Joker, and turns to a life of crime calling herself Harley Quinn (panel 3). One of the few to accomplish this feat in DC Comics history, Joker’s new sidekick and love interest was so popular among fans that she made it from animated media into Batman comic book canon in ‘Batman: Harley Quinn” from 1999, part of the crossover event “Batman: No Man’s Land” (panel 4). Receiving her own publication in 2001 (panel 5) and an appearance in the short lived Birds of Prey tv series (panel 6), Harley Quinn throughout the Pre-New 52 2000's continued to develop as a character within the DC Universe, from becoming a member of Secret Six (Birds of Prey 105) to being part of Gotham City Sirens with Poison Ivy and Catwoman (panel 7). In 2011's The New 52 reboot of the DC Universe, readers see a visually changed Harley in her own self titled publications (panel 8) and for the first time part of Amanda Walker's Suicide Squad (panel 9). Since her live action film debut in the Academy Award Winning 'Suicide Squad' (panel 10) and her several appearances in animated television and film, Harley Quinn's chaotically cute persona continues to be a fan favorite after an impressive 25 years in the DC Universe. ✌🏼❤️💪🏼
