Calycanthus is one of plants genus that we have a big collection of. We love this genus. Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus) is native to the SE, the flowers on this shrubs can be very fragrant (depends on the shrub), smelling like a cross between cloves & tutti frutti. Growing more leggy when in the sun, ours are in a part-shade setting and do well as an understory shrub. We love the color of the maroon flowers that cover the shrub which then develops into this interesting seed pods that persist in the plant through winter. A great plant for the native woodland border because of its suckering habit.
