A short video clip from my recent trip to China this summer buying a live cat at a restaurant in order to save it from a gruesome death later that day.
We decided to go to an area in Changchun called Taipei Street, which is area renowned for having dog and pigeon meat for sale there in small restaurants and stalls. We arrived early just before they were opening for business. The first animal we rescued was this cat 🐱 (Cat meat consumption isn't actually popular in this particular region but in a southern region called Guangdong they consume over 10000 cats per day😫) Each day restaurant will staff place the animals for consumption in cages outside the restaurant so customers can select the one that they want.
The chef kills the cat of their choice usually by cutting its throat. Dogs are more commonly clubbed or skinned alive.
On this particular day this special and very lucky little feline was the last one in the cage.
The cat was understandably very distressed but he was taken to shelter and able to recover. Initially we had to keep him in the bag until we arrived there and then we let him rest and calm down in his own room for a while.
Approximately 4million cats are killed in China for their meat and fur every year.
My Chinese friend Sue Chen is still doing lots of animal rescues in the region including dogs, fish, sheep, snakes and rabbits. He is a very dedicated and passionate activist and has recently opened his own shelter.
