Happy birthday to the great director Nicholas Ray, seen here on the set of Rebel Without a Cause. Such a master of both noir and technicolor. My favourites by him are probably In A Lonely Place and Johnny Guitar #nicholasray #jamesdean #inalonelyplace #theylivebynight #ondangerousground #thelustymen #knockonanydoor #johnnyguitar #biggerthanlife #rebelwithoutacause #humphreybogart #gloriagrahame #farleygranger #cathyodonnell #robertryan #idalupino #robertmitchum #susanhayward #johnderrick #joancrawford #jamesmason #barbararush #nataliewood #salmineo #oldhollywood #film #cinema #vintage

Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress Cathy O’Donnell (1923-1970) 💖💖💖. A native of Alabama, she studied drama in college before attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to further hone her craft. She made her uncredited film debut in 1945, but her first major motion picture role came as Wilma in “The Best Years of Our Lives” (1946). That is one of my favorite films of all time, and O’Donnell’s portrayal of the sweet and supportive fiancée of a man who lost his hands during WWII brings me to tears every time 💖. Other films featuring O’Donnell include “They Live By Night” (1948), “The Miniver Story” (1950), and “Ben-Hur” (1959). She also appeared in several television programs including “The Rebel”, “Perry Mason”, and “Bonanza”. O’Donnell was married to producer Robert Wyler (1900-1971), the older brother of director, producer, and screenwriter William Wyler (1902-1981). Twenty-three years apart in age, the couple were happily married for 22 years until O’Donnell passed away. In fact, she died on their wedding anniversary 😞🙏🏼💖. The couple had no children. O’Donnell passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage caused by cancer in 1970 at just 46 years old. Her husband died just 9 months later 😞🙏🏼💖. #cathyodonnell #happybirthday #heavenlybirthday #happyheavenlybirthday #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty

🎊 Happy Birthday ☀️ Cathy O’Donnell ✨🌿🌟 July 6, 1924 🌟🌿
🔺The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)🔻They Live by Night (1948) 🌿 Cathy O'Donnell was an American actress, best remembered for her roles in films-noir and the award winning movies of film director William Wyler.
Under contract with Samuel Goldwyn, O'Donnell made her film début in an uncredited role as an extra in Wonder Man (1945). O'Donnell's first major film role was in 1946's highly acclaimed The Best Years of Our Lives, playing Wilma Cameron, the high-school sweetheart of Navy veteran Homer Parrish. Homer was played by real-life World War II veteran and double amputee Harold Russell. 🌿 O'Donnell was loaned out to RKO for They Live by Night (1948), one of her most memorable films. Farley Granger played her love interest. The film is widely considered a classic of the noir genre, and is on the Guardian's list of the top ten noir films. It was directed by Nicholas Ray. The two actors were later re-teamed for Side Street (1950). Later O'Donnell starred in The Miniver Story (also 1950), as Judy Miniver and also had a supporting role in Detective Story (1951). She appeared as Barbara Waggoman, the love interest of James Stewart's character in the western The Man from Laramie (1955). Her final film role was in Ben-Hur (1959). She played the part of Tirzah, the sister to Judah Ben-Hur. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1959.

Out of a daydream in post WWII emerged a lovely, girl-next-door beauty Cathy O’Donnell (1923-1970). Despite never becoming a major star of her 17 film credits she would illuminate two classic film noirs and three William Wyler classics. Born in Alabama her daydreams of becoming an actress began watching movies at a theater her father once managed. She was further convinced of becoming an actress after Stenography training and a year working as a secretary which she hated. Sending a letter to David o Selznick, a chance meeting by an agent in Hollywood led to a screen test with Samuel Goldwyn. Signed, trained in ballet and diction she was sent on the road in “Life with Father”, had a bit in Kaye’s “Wonder Man”, before making her film debut in William Wyler’s Oscar winning classic “The Best Years of Our Life” opposite real life war veteran and double amputee Harold Russell. Touching and very moving with Russell, the film itself was a blockbuster. Marrying Wyler’s much older brother Robert and then Wyler leaving Goldwyn to form Liberty Pictures, ensures a furious Goldwyn lost interest in O’Donnell instantly. She was next cast with Granger at his suggestion in the film noir “They Live By Night.” Like their second teaming “Side Street” it was little seen at the time but considered a classic of the era. Thanks to her connection to William Wyler she appeared in two of his best in supporting roles, “Detective Story” with Douglas and the Oscar winning epic “Ben-Hur” as Heston’s sister Tirzah. In between a little TV and a number of Bs, only the hit Stewart western “The Man From Laramie” was particularly notable. Happily married she lived her tragically short life like she had once said, “All the daydreams I had as a little girl are coming true.” Granger best summed her up as O’Donnell “was very different from anyone I’d ever met: lovely, shy, wistful and ethereal.” #1923 #alabama #cathyodonnell #actresslife #williamwyler #ethereal #secretary #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #wwii #haroldrussell #benhur #filmnoir #farleygranger #beauty #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #theater #bnw #oldmovies #silverscreen #warnerarchive #daydream #turnerclassicmovies
