I get asked a lot for advice from people who want to begin painting with watercolors. Here's what I tell them.
My first piece of advice would be to not give up and to practice as much as you can, even when you don't feel like it. There are going to be days when nothing you put on paper will look right to you. You'll get frustrated and wonder why your hands can't convey on paper what you're envisioning in your mind, but that mind-to-hand coordination won't improve unless you keep trying and experimenting.
My second piece of advice would be to invest in high quality materials. With watercolor, the materials you use make the biggest difference. When I first started painting, I almost gave up, but on a whim, I decided to try out some higher quality materials. It changed EVERYTHING for me. If you're wondering if investing in higher quality materials is worth the price tag, my answer is yes. Below is a list of my favorite materials that I use on a daily basis. Don't hesitate to reach out with any specific questions for me! I'd love to hear from you.

Psalm 139:13 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.” We are all unique. We were all created with a purpose, by God. We are all special, each and every one of us, sewn together piece by piece.

I was really inspired by a @justindefratus quote in a @dynamiccatholic email last week. I love this as a daily reminder to just go back to the basics. I get so busy and caught up in my to-do lists. I recently sought out a spiritual director, as I’ve been feeling a void in my spiritual life. He is having me do Lectio Divina on Matthew’s gospel, just a few passages at a time. It’s been a few weeks now that I’m carving out intentional quiet time with God every day, experiencing Jesus’ life and teachings in a new way. I’m really trying to pay attention to what He is teaching ME. It’s so beautiful and mind-boggling how a passage I’ve heard a thousand times can speak to me in a new way as if it’s the first time. I am thankful for this quiet time and thankful for the reminder to bring it back to the basics ❤️

'The Phoenix and the Workmen' 1957, a ceramic mural by #AdamKossowski , Abertillery Workmen's Welfare Institute.
The Phoenix of hope rises out of flames destroying the previous building of 1898 ; set against the industrial landscape of the South Wales coal fields. The same five miners who are lowered underground in a cage by iron chains (left) are elevated by the books of the reading room, above their heads (right); a jagged rhythm passing through the chains, mountains and books.
Leisure time for self-improvement was a precious commodity to the working man. There may be something of the  Easter narrative behind these images also.
The  post-war Institute is an architectural blank, apart from this mural; derelict and recently further vandalised.Efforts are being made to stabalise the roof and raise money to resurrect the building, once again.
Polish artist Kossowski, who survived the Russian workamps, came to Britain vowing to dedicate his life to God.He was involved in a number of Catholic building projects, decorating them with large sgraffito and ceramic panels. At Queen Mary University of London he filled the circular chapel with scenes of the Apocalypse  and his secular subjects included the slightly more jolly #HistoryoftheOldKentRoad.

Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, so in light of this feast (and my own daughter’s baptism today!), here are some of my favorite baptism gift ideas. I love them because they are practical and beautiful and don’t need to be placed away for years before the baby can use it (like those tiny delicate rosaries often marketed for baptism gifts). AND you can support small businesses at the same time. Win-win. (One thing not included on this list are books. I have too many favorites for kids, so that will have to wait for a different post!) 🕊 Little snuggle baby Jesus from @thelittleroseshop. I just love that babies can cuddle their little Lord. 🕊 ABC Saint print from @studio_senn. Kortnee’s artwork is so sweet, and little ones can sleep soundly under the prayers of these 26 saints. 🕊 Vinyl saint and Mary dolls from @shininglightdolls. These dolls are perfect for little hands (and mouths!). 🕊 Original saint artwork by @fearlessali. Choose the child’s namesake or any other would-be patron saint. 🕊 Clothed with Christ onesie by @littlewaydesignco. Perfect for the newly baptized. 🕊 Rosary chew ring by @littleprayinghandsrc. Inexpensive, durable, and sweet. 🕊 Beautifully sewn and embroidered saint dolls by @marekmade. I can’t get over these details. Amazing. 🕊 Handstamped swaddle blankets by @annunciationdesigns. Now little ones can be wrapped in God’s love and the prayers of the saints. 🕊 Saint peg dolls by @emmausroadpegs. Painted with the most steady hand in God’s creation, these dolls are sweet and beautiful and inspiring. ⛪️ Many of these gifts are custom made and the artists have limited slots available. So do make sure to plan ahead! The dolls from @shininglightdolls are a good exception—they can be bought on Amazon Prime! ⛪️ Need more baptism gift ideas? Check out the works of these awesome artists too! @manducatrosaries @glorydesigncrochet @chewslifeshop @brickhouseinthecity @cabrinicreations @worthyofagapeshop @whymsicallotus @justloveprints

I love working with metal leaf. The reflective nature and the extra dimension, including the one of light, that it adds to the artwork is amazing. We seriously loved jamming with @joshgoodmanmusic this week!

So fortunate to have @joshgoodmanmusic leading us in music this past week! For the second year in a row, Josh woke us up with Morning Charge, got our blood pumping with energetic music, & led us in Spirit-filled worship. Anthony on drums & Brandon on bass rounded out our band this week. Thank you all for sharing your gifts & talents with us & leading us closer to God.

I love having this little one as a model for photos, but I’m making it a goal to get more photos WITH her. 📷 I am so, so grateful for the amazing blessing she is in our life. She has taught me to slow down and simply appreciate the little moments more than ever. 💕

Have a great weekend, everyone!!

#fbf to the complete interior restoration and renovation we did for the Sisters of St. Francis Motherhouse Chapel in Millvale, PA. A beautiful sanctuary apse mural of the Life of St. Francis of Assisi designed and painted by our Custom Studio team serves as a stunning backdrop for the restored reredos, new Tabernacle and marble liturgical furniture. Our meticulous plan also included new lighting, stained glass restoration, painting and decoration, restored Daprato Stations of the Cross and custom statues of the Sacred Heart and St. Francis, all providing a harmonious and inspiring interior for our beloved Sisters.

A simple pastoral scene with a science-y twist contemporizes this ancient quote by Erasmus. There is so much more to our world than meets the eye.

Absolutely over the moon with today’s mail delivery! When I ordered a gift for someone on @suekoumajohnson site, I couldn’t resist buying St. Maximillian Kolbe and a St. Thérèse postcard! Max will be faithfully watching over me at my studio desk as he holds my beloved image of Our Lady of Częstochowa!
. . .
Sue’s work is just beautiful! Kolbe is by far the best in my opinion! Thank you SO VERY much @suekoumajohnson you made my day! 😘♥️
