My name is Rob and I’m going to try pick-up where @dan.c.bee.man left off for the release of @modfarm #catchabuzz issue. But first can we just take a minute and give Dan a big round of applause… He absolutely slayed it! The last few days here have been an epic beekeeping journey, great pictures, informative text, and thoughtful comments from you guys… I’m following him for sure!
So, let’s get stared…. like I said my name is Rob Keller and a keep bees in Napa California, I have a small beekeeping business called Napa Valley Bee Co. I’m fairly active on Instagram, check me out: @napavalleybeeco. I came to this beekeeping thing from a fairly unique angle, it wasn’t something my dad did, an aunt or uncle did, or even a neighbor that got me into bees, I started incorporating them into my art practice while working on my Master’s Degree at UC Davis. Really, it’s not that weird because prior to that I had worked in veterinary medicine for most my life. Sure, it’s a bit of a stretch going from puppies and kittens to stinging insects, but for me it felt pretty seamless.
It’s been nearly 20 years since I ran bees through clear plastic tubes in gallery spaces across the country ~ a lot has changed since then. Probably the biggest thing is these days I have little or no time to work in my studio, which I’m fine with, what better way to spend your days than with bees. I’m totally blessed, I’m a full time beekeeper managing about 100 +/- colonies in one of the most beautiful places in the world, albeit its not quite the epicenter for honey production here, but it is the epicenter for other things. I keep two decent sized apiaries and numerous out yards around the valley at restaurants, wineries, and gardens where I am able to teach adolescent Montessori kids and adults sustainable hive management. We’ll get into it a little more over the next few days, but I’m totally 100% treatment free, foundationless, stationary, and really focused on locally adapted stock. My hope in the take over here is to share my passion for education, a few silly experiences, and maybe introduce you guys to a few of the bee players in my hood.
