[2/3] The Gauntlet: 96km bike ride over 3 laps 🚴🏻♀️ 4:50:16
I knew the bike would be my worst leg, and was hoping for a sub-4:30 finish. First 20km in ~1hr meant it would be close, but turned out that the road km markings were incorrect and missing the last 7km. Actual 1st lap time: ~1:15!!
Kept momentum and was even faster on the second lap until disaster struck: puncture. Nope, didn't pack a spare inner (stupid) and had to wait to be rescued by race crew. They didn't have one either and was told my ride was over (I cried). Miraculously though, whilst picking up another rider with a broken bike, another crew member had an inner. 40mins lost, but I could continue!
Out again to finish the second lap and onto the third, this time all alone. 12km (by the markers) down and nearing the two worst hills for the last time, I noticed that once again my back tyre was deflating. Damnit. I started walking my bike towards the next marshal and resigned myself that once again, the ride was done. This time though, I was saved by Barry (the legend), a local cyclist who stopped by the side of the road and generously gave me his spare inner (and a hug!). Another 20min I could have avoided, but that doesn't even matter. Held together by generosity, luck and determination I cycled those awful hills and made it back to transition at last!
