Raising a child without exposing them to cast system.
It’s important to me & here’s my story-
My paternal grandfather was against casteism and he didn’t have a caste-specific surname. He didn’t give any such surname to his children as well. It came down to me and my sister not having any surnames in school. Many people used to ask us our surname and caste. We didn’t have any answer and people thought of us as belonging to some lower cast. We were not even teenagers and it affected us so much due to being raised in a caste conscious society.
So, when I filled my form for 10th standard boards, I added a surname which was common in my caste. Later my sister did the same. Seeing this, our parents added the same surname to our brother’s name too.
A few years later, I realized that many people still thought of me as a lower caste as my surname is used widely in many castes. I was very sad but started realizing my mistake. What was I trying to prove and to whom? How does my caste matter? Let people think what they want. It doesn’t have any bearing on what I can or cannot do.
Like many women, I didn’t change my surname post marriage. When we decided on a name for our little girl, the initial thought was to add both our surnames but the resulting name didn’t sound very exciting so we added just my husband’s surname. At that time, I was unaware of how Deepika from @mommyingtales decided her daughter’s name and I am not that creative to come up with such ideas or I would have done the same.
I don’t believe in caste-system at all and I am not trying to make any political point. I want that Idhaya doesn’t get caught up in such silly stuff and we are trying our best to raise her just as a happy human. Her surname is a very small and rather insignificant part of her identity. That’s it.
What are your views on caste-system in our country?
