Opened five hours ago,not decanted.
Beautiful nose of dark cherry and raspberry, with hints of coffee, leather and spices. Napa Cab,you say? No,no,no,no,no. No over-oaked,syrupy,blueberry-pancake-topping concoctions here... “Ethereal” or “iron fist in a velvet glove” is how some wine critics like to describe wines like these; Burgundy, usually, but it should apply for this one, too.
The palate is medium bodied, with the perfect balance of fruit, tannins and acidity,(perfect wine...)and the finish goes on for what feels like forever.
The second sip brings out a bit of a meaty quality with hints of herbs. I’m looking over at the kitchen wishing I could have just a couple of slices of NY steak, but there’s no fooling myself - the cooks have long been gone. I quickly remind myself that I’m drinking top notch Sangiovese at its peak, and I won’t have to be back here for a week.
On that note,I’m probably gonna open some Napa Cab next week for the holiday and bite my tongue-literally and figuratively- while chewing on some USDA Prime steak, ‘cause turkey ain’t my thing, really. Those sides,though...
