Unfortunately, a lot of people make the mistake of choosing the Fiesta Taco Salad which, to there defense, *seems* to be the best option when the menu is flooded with tacos and nachos.

But when you look at the actual nutrition of this salad, you'll see it's LOADED with calorie-dense toppings like sour cream, avocado ranch dressing, shredded cheese, and refried beans...

HERE'S YOUR FIX 🛠✅: instead of going with the calorie-dense salad, choose the Fresco (no cheese) Grilled Chicken & Steak Tacos w/ a side of rice and black beans 👌

Not only are you getting the same amount of protein, but you're getting it for HALF the calories.

Super hungry 🐻? Throw on another steak/chicken taco or side of rice and beans. Even with that addition, you'll still have a lower-calorie & more filling meal 👍

In college, I work right next to a Starbucks, and I can't count the number of times I saw someone grab one of these Protein Boxes and a Smoothie for a "high protein" healthy breakfast between classes...

You see, people often make the mistake of thinking anything "high protein" must automatically be good for their weight loss goals 🙅‍♂️
•
And while protein is definitely important, especially while dieting, you need to make sure the "high protein" foods you're buying aren't ALSO packed with loads of extra calories...
•
Which is why I think it's better to pay attention to the calorie-to-protein ratio of different foods. In the scenario above, I'd opt for the low-fat turkey bacon & egg white sandwiches.
•
You'll get more food ✅ , equal protein ✅, and for 250 fewer calories ✅
•
I also included the green smoothie to further illustrate why I despise liquid calories. Sure, the smoothie may have healthy ingredients, but at the cost of 260 total calories!

If It were me, I'd skip the smoothie and maybe order a side salad with light dressing. That'll end up saving ~150-200 calories 👍

Gas stations are pretty much snack food heaven 😇. Unfortunately, most places are stalked Skittles, Twizzlers, Butterfingers—you know, the typical candy stuff...

So to someone trying to lose weight, a Starbucks coffee drink with an organic Lärabar seems to be a much healthier swap for the regular Soda and Snickers.

As you can see, though, ☝️that's not exactly the case 😕
•
Sure, Lärabars are organic and all, but they're also filled with super calorie-dense ingredients. The Starbucks Frap doesn't seem too bad either, especially compared to a regular soda, but dig into the nutrition facts and you'll see it has more calories per ounce than a regular chocolate Yoo-hoo!

HERE'S YOUR FIX ✅: not all Starbucks drinks are bad. The iced coffee with milk (light version) will still provide a caffeine kick but for a fraction of the calories of a bottled frap👌

I'd also ditch the Lärabar and go with a Quest Bar. It'll give ~15 more grams protein for 100 fewer calories 👌

To the frantic dieter on a rushed morning commute, an "iced coffee" is just "iced coffee." What's more, a low-fat muffin would obviously be better as a light snack compared to a bacon 🥓, egg 🍳, and cheese 🧀 wrap!

As you can see, though, that ain't the case here 🙅

Most people wouldn't think twice about adding a vanilla swirl flavor shot to their iced coffee—it's not "cream & sugar," right? But it's basically the same, if not worse, and adds a whopping ~200 calories to your morning coffee! ☕️🙀

Then there's the harmless low-fat blueberry muffin. The "low-fat" label wants to tricks you into thinking this thing is a healthy breakfast snack... in reality, it's packed with ~410 calories‼️ (but only 11g of fat! Lol 😜)

HERE'S YOUR FIX ✅: order the iced coffee with skim milk & Splenda. You'll still get a sorta-creamy coffee drink, but for 1/4th the calories.
•
Despite having bacon and cheese, the Wake Up Wrap is actually a great option for a breakfast snack. Not only is it low in calories (~190), but opposite of the muffin, it has a decent chunk of protein that will help keep you feel for a few hours. 😋👍

In this post series, The plan is to show a seemingly weight loss friendly fast food meal that actually contains a ton of sneaky calories. Then, I'll suggest a BETTER option (in my opinion 😊) for folks looking to lose weight!

For Today's post, we have two "light lunches" from Starbucks...

I used to work right next to a Starbucks in college, and I can't count the number of times I saw someone grab one of these Bistro Boxes and a Protein Smoothie for a "snack" between classes...

You see, people often make the mistake of thinking anything "high protein" must automatically be good for their weight loss goals.
#
But while protein is definitely important while dieting you need to be carful that your "high protein" foods aren't ALSO coming packed with loads of extra calories...
#
That's why, In my opinion, it's better to pay attention to the calorie-to-protein ratio of your foods.
#
So in the scenario above, I would opt for the egg white wrap as a snack , even though it has less protein.
#
The reason? It's has nearly half the calories (I don't think any diet would consider 830 calories a "snack-sized" meal...), and I still get some protein protein and micros from the fruit. 👌👌
#
Plus, I'll easily be able to get those additional 20 grams of protein later in the day—and for WAY fewer calories than the 400 I'd spend on the Bistro Box/Smoothie lunch.

Tuna from a can or pouch is typically very low in calories, fat, and booming💥with protein. So assuming Subway Tuna is the same, people will just remove the cheese and add *light* mayo thinking that'll fix it! (Again... I'm guilty 😏)

The problem, though, is that Subway's Tuna comes premixed with a-hell-of-alotta fattening mayo, which sky-rockets 🚀 the total calorie count 👎

Then there's those freakin' Sun Chips 😤... Listen, I don't care if Sun Chips have the phrases "whole grain," "lower fat," and "heart healthy" on their package. They're still chips, and they're JUST as calorie dense as regular Doritos.

HERE'S YOUR FIX 🛠✅: the Oven Roasted Chicken Sandwich is going to give you the most bang for your "weight loss buck" 💸 . Use a zero-calorie sauce, like mustard, and this sandwich provides a decent chunk of protein for few total calories in return.

Throw in a bag of Baked Lays (which are ACTUALLY going to be lower in calories than regular chips), and you're set!
•
PROTIP💪: extra veggies are free of charge and add little to no additional calories. So if you wanna maximize the fullness factor of this meal, load up on as many as you can handle 🥒🥕🥗🍅🌰🌶

Obviously, pancakes aren't the highest protein, lowest calorie food choice at IHOP. But ya know what? Sometimes you don't want egg whites and spinach — you just wanna eat some flippin' pancakes! 🥞

Not only are they delicious 😋, they're also good for the soul 😇

But even pancakes can trick you into eating more calories than you'd expect...

Take IHOP's Harvest Grain n Nut pancakes. To the health–conscious dieter, these may *seem* less "bad" than regular old pancakes... DEFINITELY better than chocolate chip pancakes, right 🤷‍♀️

As it turns out, these "healthy" pancakes come packed with ~300 calories MORE than the same quantity of chocolate chip pancakes! 😵💥
•
HERE'S YOUR FIX ✅: clearly, pancakes shouldn't be your primary source of calories while dieting...
•
BUT if you're eating plenty of veggies 🥗, fruits 🍉, and hitting your calorie/macro targets, it's TOTES okay to have a few pancakes and still make process 🤗🥞
•
If you're going to IHOP specifically... First, congratulations 👏. Second, opt for the regular buttermilk or chocolate chip pancakes . Skip the high-calorie "healthy" pancakes all together 👎❌

Surprisingly, though, this sandwich comes with 700 calories‼️ Primarily from the whole wheat bread (which is still calorie-dense), Swiss cheese, and high-fat sauce.

The salad 🥗 isn't too bad, but I included it to make a point of something that's very important to watch for...

You see, most of the time, balsamic vinaigrette dressing is fairly low in calories. BUT, that's not always going to be the case‼️The dressing brand used at Arby's is actually quite high at 120 calories per packet. 😧👎

HERE'S YOUR FIX ✅: If it were me deciding, I'd go with two of these Jr Ham & Cheddar Melts & a side salad w/ light Italian dressing (only ~20 calories)

That's ☝️sorta what she was thinking before conducting this little experiment👩‍🔬... so when she discovered that her regular Panera "light breakfast" was upwards of 700 calories, she was in total shock! 😨🤦‍♀️...

Now, here's the cool part ▶️▶️ knowing how I design my Fast Food Fixes, she looked for a way to reduce her calories while still enjoying her latte with a blueberry flavored pastry, and this is what she came up with! (Proud friend moment 👏😢)

HERE'S YOUR FIX ✅: even though the Caffe Mocha is "skinny," it still has more calories than the regular old latte 💁‍♂️

In regards to choice of pastry, you're usually better of skipping the Muffin in most scenarios. Typically, they're locked 'b loaded with hundreds of sneaky calories. Plus, they just end up leaving crumbles in the corner pockets or your driver seat 😤...

In this fix, we're switching out ↔️ the high-calorie muffin for the lower calorie bagel flat with a half serving of low-fat blueberry cream cheese 👌

For the most part, this place isn't very weight loss friendly👎. The good news, though, is that the majority of entrees are fried and drenched in sauce — making it easy-peasy to identify them as high-calorie foods...

But there is ONE☝️menu item that could potentially trip you up 👣...
•
If you find yourself eating here, you might *think* the best choice would be the Eggplant Tofu 🍆🍥 with brown rice. Veggies and tofu would be better and more weight loss friendly than the fried or sauce-covered meat options, right? 🤷‍♀️
•
But of all the entrees, the Eggplant Tofu 🍆🍥 turns out to be one of the HIGHEST calories options‼️😮
•
HERE'S YOUR FIX 🛠✅: after scouring the menu 👀, it turns out that the Broccoli Beef is probably your best bet for a weight loss friendly meal.
•
Even though the entree already includes veggies, I recommend adding even more veggies 🥗in place of half the rice 🍚. That'll give you MORE food volume for FEWER total calories 👌
•
Side note📝: there's absolutely NOTHIN' wrong with rice... anyone who tells you rice is bad or "evil" are likely the same folks who recommend sticking ~400 calories of butter in your morning coffee ☕️🐮... yeah, that should help 🤦‍♂️...

Second side note📝📝: don't worry about brown vs. white rice. One is not inherently better than the other, and you should choose the one YOU enjoy most 😋

But there IS one good option, I've found, and it's the NAKED (hehe ☺️) tenders with buffalo chips—which actually have much fewer calories and fat than regular fast food fries. Slap on a side salad 🥗 for them #micronutrients, and you're golden! 👌

Plus, the best part is you don't have to be the hippie ordering a "salad" at a beer & wings joint 🥕🤓✌️

Tuna from a can/pouch is typically very low in calories, fat, and booming with protein. So assuming Subway Tuna is the same, many people will just remove the cheese and add *light* mayo thinking that'll fix it! (Again... I'm guilty 😏)
