The Aaron West shows a few weeks back had gotten me really emotional. The album had resonated immediately when I first heard it in 2014 and I had seen Dan Campbell play solo four times in support of it. But there was something about these full band shows that really hit me. Both nights, when they did played “Carolina Coast,” I teared up. At the end of the San Diego show, I asked Dan to write down my favorite lyric from that song (and the one that means the most to me) on a piece of paper with the intention of getting a tattoo of it. I was finally able to get the work done this weekend.
I kind of feel that I’ve reached a turning point in my life where I’ve been able to look back on the experiences that have shaped who I am. Some good, some bad. Some of the bad has been BAD. But despite what I’ve gone through, I’m still here. There were times when I’ve wanted to give up. When things looked hopeless. But somehow, I made it through to the other side. All banged up but alive.
And yes, this is the emo-est tattoo I’ve ever gotten.
