Still no flipped grip in Dhanurasana for me so it’s strap work for a while. @yogawithaislinn proposed the beautiful alternative of Eka Pada Rajakapotasana aka my absolute favorite pose in the whole world. And a pose in which I can flip the grip, so I worked on the muscle memory a few times. So many things are changing in my tissues right now after some time of really focused homepractice and some poses get more accessible while others get harder in the process. My One-Legged King Pigeon does get edgy by this and I have to settle into it anew. Still my absolute favorite pose in the whole world.

I had to put extra thick padding beneath my right knee because I managed to color it to a lovely purple. No yoga injury at all - I tried to enter my shower hastily last week and smashed my knee into the bathroom wall 🀭 Apart from having to transfer much more mindfulness from my mat into the rest of the day I really love how my backbends are coming along. The poses are by no means deeper but so much better aligned and there’s so much more space in my lumbar spine. It’s making me cringe looking at older pictures and how I hinged in the lower back. So much healtier and bringing the action up to the thoracic spine and the heart chakra. There’s still much to work on but I feel the subtle changes every day.

In case you ever wondered where my current edge in my practice is - it’s right here, in Chinstand. Going upside down on my throat really freaks me out. While practicing my legs literally trembled with fear. It’s a special kind of fear though. This kind of fear you feel when you were asking out your first love as a teenager for the first time. Fully knowing that the reason for your fear is something (or someone) really awesome but just trembling because of the magnitude of it all. So that’s where I’m at with my Chinstand. I’m asking it out after some nervous circling around it, trembling and with a racing heart, smiling and asking myself what the heck I’m doing here. And like with first love there’s nothing like these first stumbling steps into this new exciting territory. These moments I cherish deeply right now, much more than progress or the prospect of getting the full pose one day. Because they’re what we'll always remember.

Today I was tired, running late and thought about taking a rest day / skipping practice. But it’s a fine line between needed rest and just not showing up. I think it’s an art to decipher the subtle communications of the body concerning what’s right and healthy at the given moment. A beautiful art I'm practicing every time I step on my mat. So today I showed up to interview the wiser parts of myself what’s up. I was fully prepared to call it a day after some seated warm up poses but some heart opening wanted to happen. I approached these backbends extra gently and that’s exactly the moment when so much release and inner strength appeared. The body knows. Always. It’s about asking the right questions and taking the time to listen to the answers.

These aren’t my deepest forward folds but show my regular cooldown at the end of a backbend focused practice. Carmen taught me this specific sequence to decompress the spine and release the muscles after deep backbends and I practice her teachings religiously. It really makes all the difference and I haven’t experienced any muscle soreness from that day on. Which is huge because before I took her training I was sore literally every day - as every single one of my poor coworkers will not so happily remember because I informed them/complained/bragged about it every time πŸ˜‚ But no more! Honestly, Carmen’s methodology rocks on so many levels.

Forever working on getting that arch higher up the thoracic spine and not folding the backbend in the lumbar region. Breathing through the discomfort and softening around these edges. #backbendsaremyhappyplace but they also keep me on my toes in a tough loving way. Today I tried Carmen’s alternative of dropping on knee down from Wheel Pose for the very first time. Not for the faintest of heart and the sudden asymmetry of the backbend felt really strange at the first try. It got better but I managed some hilarious falls out of it, of course. I’m so curious how this pose will look like with more practice.

And of course all the homework of hip opening. These hip openers are teaching me so much lately. Some lessons easy to grasp and some viscerally transmitted in a very foreign language.
One aspect Iβ€˜m feeling into right now is to really take my time and recognizing when I’m hurrying. Meghan @meghancurrie_teachertraining shared a book excerpt (not sure which book though) saying that in every bit of hurry there’s a bit of fear. I experienced the effects of hurry in my practice pretty much lately. Almost always if there’re time constraints or a kinda to-do list for after practice in the back of my mind I can literally feel the tissues constrict and tense up in poses. It’s not that I really rush into poses and compromise alignment and safety, it’s something much more subtle. As soon as I’m getting into the slightest hurry mode something shifts internally, the focus moves from the present moment to what’s coming next or what’s missing affecting the physical sensation profoundly. This is in fact is fear in disguise. And maybe that’s my current practice: find the places of fear in my body. Listen to the stories imprinted in these tissues and rewrite messages no longer needed from a place of greater fearlessness. Because it’s always coming down to the question of love or fear in the end. And slowly I realize it’s not always the big questions but the very subtle feelings that call to be explored.

Slowly my angry tendons in the back of my knees start to like me again. I'm still very careful not to upset them again. All things hamstring are a true test of Ahimsa or non-violence towards myself. I can push myself in other poses and fight for strength or balance but my hamstrings call me out immediately if I’m coming from a place of ego and ambition instead of love. I literally have to love them into a pose. It happens only on some days but I’m slowly getting better at it. In the bottom right picture you can see the alternative proposed by @rachely.wang : Urdhva Prasarita Eka Padasana in Baddha Parsva Konasana. One thing she said stuck with me especially. Rachel brought up that how we react to falling out of a pose holds powerful knowledge. Because really - this is making all the difference for me right now.

Armbalances are my happy place. Which was kinda surprise because when I started yoga no one would’ve suspected that I’d enjoy strength related poses. Backbends yes, I've a natural bendy spine (in that direction) and look like I'm generally more on the flexible side (only my hamstrings didn’t get the memo). I’ve never been physically strong in my life before and only entered a fitness studio once (only used their sauna). But being able to carry my body weight on my hands was and still is one of the most empowering lessons my practice taught me. I love all the armbalances in this picture but Elephant Trunk Pose is surely the hardest but most rewarding. For me it’s all about the quad activation of the extended leg. But the hip opening came along nicely, too. The biggest progress is nonetheless that I'm finally able to do Crow Toe Taps! I tried them once in March I think because #carmenmademedoit but had to use a bolster against a wall because I was so afraid to smash my face while shifting my weight. Back then I must’ve decided that I'll just can’t do them and never practiced them again. Which isn’t what’s working normally but today I got a present from my practice. Sadly I couldn’t answer your questions of how many reps I can do @rachely.wang , because I was so surprised I actually could do them that I fell out of the pose laughing πŸ˜‚ I'll try again!

Although the Baby version eluded me somehow I see quite some progress. There’s still so much room to grow in the full pose but I lost the wall to secure my back foot and it feels so much more manageable than during past tries. The real work happens in the kneeling version though. You can see clearly how I can get much better into the torso rotation and shoulder opening when taking the balancing element away. And can we revel a minute in the beautiful fact that I finally got that front leg straight in Eka Pada Koundinyasana II ? Thought that would never happen but after that strained tendon thing my hamstrings do love me again πŸ˜‚

All about the feelings today. I was faced with several beautiful situations calling me to just own some issues and thereby let go of a lot. And as much as I can release what happened off the mat with my physical practice in the evening, I sure do feel it the other way round. Shifting some stuff during the day changed the feeling in my hips tremendously. Release in the hip area isn’t always nice and easy but today it felt lovely. A subtle vibrant lightness I don’t experience often. This practice never ever ceases to amaze me.

After a really strange day at the office I decided to skip practice today and went for indian food with my co-worker/friend/partner in all things strange this week. But coming home the buzz of a day full of drama, problems big and little, keeping my cool (at least I hope so) and general wtfness still didn’t leave. So some forearm shenanigans were just what the doctor ordered. Caveat: This is yoga with a belly full of ginger-carrot soup, chicken in cashew sauce and mango cream. Carmen was absolutely right that getting into Lotus upside down is only the first step and that the trouble starts on the way down. No way to get near the armpits without butt landing as promised. But I went where I got being still in control and hovered a while to build muscles memory. I’m glad I taped the movement because falling in my case had definitely to do with not rounding the back enough. Maybe I need to even get further away from the wall to encourage that movement.
As always I loved the beautiful alternatives by @gmcyoga and @yogawithaislinn .

All the strength drills today. Lolasana (or LOLasana as @yl_mm called it) is still at the "lowest height of blocksβ€œ stage. Which is probably because I don’t practice it often enough. I love strength poses but Lolasana somehow tends to slip my mind. But #carmenmademedoit and will probably continue to do so, so I better practice πŸ˜… The same goes for this v-legged armbalance, doesn’t get better without practice. Surprisingly πŸ˜‚ As always I’m loving the alternatives provided by @gmcyoga and @yogawithaislinn to pieces. They’re the perfect prep poses and I love to practice as well as teach them dearly.

A beautiful pose in which I’ll forever be working on getting the back straighter. It always feels super straight... until I check the pictures. The alternative Goraksasana is one of my favorite poses. The whole balancing on the knees and falling is so hilariously funny, it’s an instant mood lifter. I wish I could teach this pose to everyone I meet who is in need of a little laughter and lightheartedness, but I think the pose looks a little too extreme for most people to tryπŸ˜‚ The two alternatives by @gmcyoga and @yogawithaislinn are staples in my hip focused practices and very dear to my heart. All poses including a bind of any form have such a soothing effect on me. It’s like holding hands with yourself or giving yourself a hug. And who couldn’t use a hug sometimes? πŸ€—

All things Lotus tend to come easy to me but today just wasn’t a balance day. Although I used all the alternatives by Carmen, @gmcyoga and @yogawithaislinn as prep poses after a long week at the office there’s just not that much focus left. Which is totally understandable now but freaked me out when I kept falling on my bum trying to bind that Half Lotus in Kasyapasana. Sometimes I meet anger, ambition and the stubbornness of a three year old on my mat. But the mat is a great place to work through this and there’s nothing like a good spinal twist and Savasana to clean the slate again.

On Wednesdays I teach, so there’s no time for a full homepractice or challenge pictures. While I really like the idea to use theses Wednesdays to post some crooked first tries or hilarious fails today I wanna post a progress pic. The top picture is a Rajakapotasana II from this March and the bottom one is from a few days ago. At first glance I saw nothing. Well, I thought to myself, you’re practice is at a point where progress maybe comes slower now. Then my ego proposed to exactly measure how far the hands are away from the knees or the distance between head and feet. Maybe these distances got a little smaller, but really - whatever. Not important. At second or maybe third glance I saw the real achievement here. The real change is in the lower back. Can you see how much more space there is in the second picture? In March I was literally hinging in the lumbar area. And that was when I was well aware of the dangers of backbending mainly from my (very flexible and forgiving) lumbar spine and was consciously trying for months to get the backbend to my upper back fully understanding that I would otherwise be inviting pain and injury. But it just didn’t happen. I worked on my thoracic spine diligently but felt nothing change. For a very long time. So that’s a mighty slow progress. And a few days ago I could see it in this Rajakapotasana at the wall. The opening in the upper spine, the hip flexors, the throat area. It’s happening. Slowly and behind the scenes. Patience, daily work and the mind blowing cYoga methodology did the trick. Smart little things adding up over time - a recipe for achieving some awesome stuff.

Definitely a backbend day, rather not so much a splits day. But that’s the magic of these complex poses, there’s always work to do. When I’m working at my edge in such a complex pose as Eka Pada Rajakapotasana III it’s always a fine line between having enough prep poses to open and warm up all the different areas involved and not getting tired by the time the peak poses is due. This gets easier with time. Today I would’ve loved to have more tries at the wall but after three rounds it was definitely enough. Again I included all the alternatives by Carmen, @rachely.wang and @gmcyoga . I especially love how my Tiger Pose is coming along. I’ve only tried it one time before when #carmenmademedoit back in June and wasn’t sure if I even would get the balance. But getting that close to the foot was totally unexpected. A beautiful pose and I honestly have no idea why I didn’t practice it more often. Definitely will do in the future.

To be honest I was a little nervous about today’s practice. Splits and forward folds aren’t my strong suit anyway and I was really anxious to mess with the tendons in the back of my knees again. But I really liked the alternatives proposed by @gmcyoga and @rachely.wang and they added to a lovely warm up. Something melted and my hamstrings let all the tension go. I completely lost any sense of time and could’ve practiced much longer, but there’s this work thing starting early πŸ™„πŸ˜‚
Hamstring release doesn’t happen often to me in this gorgeous way but when it does it completely blows my mind. Hamstrings tell very subtle stories about letting go and surrender, about ahimsa (non-violence) and finding ways out of constriction (outer and inner). Today I was able to listen.

Don't believe a word. It was one heck of a lot of hard work in terms of keeping the balance through muscular tension but letting go in the right places to split. All this being said: this was the closest that I got to Carmen's @cyogalab shiny-cozy-elegant-effortless #wallsplits . πŸ˜“

The Bow Pose variant with the strap proposed by @gmcyoga is one of my favorite ways to use a prop to instantly get a feel for the full pose even if you’re not there yet. And Viparita Dandasana at the moment is much more comfortable for me than regular Wheel Pose, so the version by @rachely.wang was a real treat. I checked and found out that I practiced this wall version of Rajakapotasana II last in March. It got a little deeper, I think, and with all the backbends lately I can direct the opening much more to the thoracic spine. Subtle little changes. A little more awareness with every practice.

I never learned it properly in class and am very careful with my alignment. It’s also the one backbend my lower back complains easily about. But #carmenmademedoit and I practice it for every challenge it’s called for and for good measure in between. Today I loved the version with the hands at the legs and I worked for some long breaths at my edge. To prep I also included the alternatives by @gmcyoga and @rachely.wang into today’s practice. Puppy Pose at the wall still eludes me somehow but it was quite comfortable today. The Cobra at the wall doesn’t look like much in this picture but it really felt amazing. I could feel the upper back seamlessly and effortlessly open with every breath. Best prep pose for my least favorite backbend (we’re becoming friends slowly).

⬅️And then, out of nothing -- I CRIED. For minutes. Big fat mascara smearing tears. (Happening again while I am typing this, WTH???) 😭😒😭

Carmen, what are you doing to me?!? 😩 This pose is so not in my practice but I worked my ass off to warm up and prep... and here’s my best effort. I’m still nursing that angry tendon in the back of my knee and it’s complaining just a little bit. And because needed something pretty after all this work I added the alternative pose suggested by @gmcyoga : Krounchasana or β€žThe most beautiful pose in the worldβ€œ. A great pose to keep you working, I tell you. There’s the quadstretch that’s no joke, you can always deepen the backbend, or the hipopening and when you do so it throws you out of balance. Luckily my knees have no issues with this pose. What a lovely complexity and so much to do. I added a picture of a prep pose Anjaneyasana just because I love how the light seems to emerge from my throat chakra.
