“Black Thrash Attack”(1996) by Aura Noir on Malicious Records. The title says it all on this one because that’s exactly what they deliver on their second release. 42 min of Black/Thrash Metal of the finest sort. Like I always says about the genre it’s a very difficult blend to master, only Nifelheim is better at it in my opinion and that says much about the excellence of this album. Aura Noir had debuted on the Shagarath (Dimmu Borgir) owned record label Hot Records with the MCD “Dreams Like Deserts”(1995). I posted a promo from 1995 for that record like a year ago if you want to check it out. I didn’t get that one in 95 basically because there were so many other bands that was releasing amazing albums back then and being 15 years one had to prioritize. I should have gotten it because it’s a really great MCD. “Black Thrash Attack” I got though much due to the fact of them being signed to the amazing Malicious Records. It was kind of weird I thought that Apollyon and Aggressor (Carl-Michael Eide) alternated instruments on songs. If Apollyon sang and played bass on a song Aggressor would play drums and vice versa. As you probably know Aggressor doesn’t play drums anymore after his falling accident from a fifth floor building in 2005. Aura Noir was joined by another member for this record guitarist Blasphemer, most known from playing guitar with Mayhem. Also Aldrahn designed the Aura Noir logo he also wrote the lyrics to the song “The One Who Smite”. The handwriting on the back and on the booklet was done by Garm. The band have released 3 full length albums after “Black Thrash Attack” I recommend “Deep Tracts of Hell”(1998) they aren’t as great as the bands two first releases in my opinion but if you like this one give them a listen. “Black Thrash Attack” is somewhat of a hidden gem in lack of better words not an album many people talk about these days. A record that’s way overdue for me to get on vinyl also.

Man I love this guy. In all his incarnations. Very glad his "fall" off the 5 story parking structure wasn't his end.

There's not really anything I can say about Ved Buens Ende's "Written in Waters" that you haven't heard before. Pure magic! My selection for "V". Luckily ordered this from Misanthropy Records (UK) sometime in the later part of the 90's, they sure had a killer label and distro. .

Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone did this film "The Misanthrope - The Existence of... Solitude and Chaos" (2007) this has both the DVD and a CD (great ambient music by Nocturno). This is not a documentary, rather a document of it's time. Hard to explain but Nocturno filmed a bunch of stuff and put it together into a film. As I'm a huge Darkthrone fan this is awesome, but maybe not for everyone. It has footage of Fenriz and Nocturno rehearsing, in the studio, ice fishing with 2 members of Enslaved, hiking with 2 members from Aura Noir. They're featured a lot in this movie Aura Noir, who at the time was signed to Darkthrone's Tyrant Syndicate record company (now defunct), a label connected to Peaceville. Actually the signing with Apollyon and Aggressor is captured in this movie. Also Aura Noir live performance at Elm Street, Oslo the release party for their "The Merciless" (2004) album. I really wish the live part was longer. Also Nocturno Culto visits Tokyo for Pete Beste photo exhibition in Japan. Label mates Gallhammer appears very briefly in person and playing live. The movie has much nature footage from beautiful Norway. Bonus features are a promo video for the song "Too Old, Too Cold", stills etc. and a 12-page booklet. It's about 1 hour long, that's the only complaint I have it's a bit short. But this is essential for diehard fans of Darkthrone!!

The only full length album of Ved Buens Ende "Written in Waters" (1995) white vinyl reissue from 2012. They changed the cover art for this release it's alright, but I prefer the original artwork I'm used to on the CD. In this band mastermind Carl-Michael Eide was drummer/"clean vocalist", Vicotnik on guitar/"grim vocals" and Skoll on bass/keyboards. They had an awesome demo "Those Who Caress the Pale" (1994). At live performances in 1995 they had a great lineup, the then quite unknown vocalist ICS Vortex and Sverd on keyboards. What a great combo! I have only heard some live songs on YouTube, but there's a rehearsal/live performance bootleg I want "Coiled in Obscurity" (2002). I discovered Ved Buens Ende rather late in my Black Metal listening "career". Being a Arcturus and Dødheimsgard fan in 1995/96 made me interested in them. I didn't get my hands on the CD until 1997/98. It's hard to describe the music avantgarde Black Metal, experimental, jazz influences with Eide's atmospheric/hypnotic vocals. The production is so excellent that this could have been recorded yesterday it sounds timeless. Nothing like any other band of the Black Metal scene in 1995. I probably wouldn't appreciate it back then so I'm glad it took me some years to hunt it down. I was more musically openminded when I got it. In a Top-20 best Norwegian Black Metal albums "Written in Waters" would be included. The price of this is very high today, I got my vinyl years ago. Ok that the original Malicious Records vinyl (and CD) from 1995 cost much, but even this reissue has gone up in price. Anyway Ved Buens Ende was a great band but quit in 1997. They made a comeback 2006-07 but no new material was released.

Many "must have" records in this Malicious Records ad from 1996. Both the great Gorgoroth "Antichrist" (1996) & "Pentagram" (1994) with just the logo on this cover, but the title is in the spine on this release. My favorite Gorgoroth record "Under The Sign of Hell" (1997) is listed as a coming release. Also the mighty Dødheimsgard with their "Monumental Possession" (1996). On this one Alver replaced the legend Fenriz on bass and Apollyon joined on guitar (later bassist). I'm gonna write more about this record in a vinyl post. Also their excellent "Satanic Art" (1998) MCD is listed as a coming release. But Dødheimsgard signed with Moonfog Productions and it was released there instead. Also the excellent "Black Thrash Attack" (1996) by Aura Noir the band featuring Carl-Michael Eide, Apollyon and Blasphemer. The self titled debut record of Borknagar (1996) and the first full length album by "Kampfar - Mellom Skogkledde Aaser" (1997). Sadly the German Malicious Records quit in 1997. -
