(TAG a friend who needs to let go of some lettuce in his/her life!) One of the greatest lessons I've learned from a fellow motivational speaker (Catherine Devyries) is the lettuce story of US-based Delta Airlines. The story explains why letting go in life isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
In 1993, one of the cabin crew members of this airline suggested to take out the lettuce from the entrees of passengers because “no one was eating it anyway”. Management hesitated but followed the suggestion to test. Surprisingly, passengers didn’t complain after the experiment. No one really cared. Delta Airlines thought it was important, but it wasn’t for the customers. After 1 year, the business saved 1.4 million US dollars by simply taking out the lettuce.
Life, is like being surrounded by lettuce that we need to learn to let go. We keep on holding onto so many “lettuce” thinking they’re all important. We want to get this, we want to taste that, we want to become like this person, etc. We fail to realize that while the lettuce makes us feel better, it is nothing but a wasteful filler of time or effort. The reality is, we can’t be “everything” that we want to be. Sooner or later, we have to make one bold choice and commit to it. We have to let go of the lettuce. Remember, for every “no” that you say, you become empowered to say “yes” to something else. And that something else should be one that matters most to you in life.
What is that lettuce in your life that you should let go?
