The recent news that a young homeless woman died in Cardiff city centre a few days ago has shocked me to my core. It is a travesty and a tragedy that in Britain in 2017 we have rising homelessness, and people dying because they are not able to meet their most basic of needs.
Homelessness is not a choice, it is the result of successive governments' failure to provide adequate resources to support the most vulnerable people, of years of cuts to services, rising living costs and reduced income.u It is not a problem caused by recklessness, undeserving or 'bad choices'. AND it is getting worse. How many more people will die before things start to improve?
Next week i am embarking on the longest walk I have ever done in one day, when I walk from my house in the Rhondda to the Huggard Centre in Cardiff. I am asking for sponsorship for this crazy plan, and have raised over £200 already. I am so grateful for the donations I have received but need more. Clearly there is a lot of work ahead for the Huggard Centre this coming winter and they need all the support we can give them.
