'M/F' Influences & Favourites, PART 3:
Alanis Morissette • "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" • 1998 🙌🏼
@Alanis has always been one of my favourite artists. I know JLP’s her most universally beloved album (& I will always adore that record -it changed my life!) but for me, this album - turning 20 this year - has always been my fave from her & has had a big influence on me & my songs. I still listen to it all the time & there are so many elements I enjoy: its endless wealth of melodies & styles; the conversational phrasing of lyrics & the way she makes the most unfeasible of rhyming couplets actually work, in ways I find endlessly amusing/pleasing; the album's emotionally vulnerable themes & lyrics-candid & direct, sarcastic & playful; moments of latent rage & brutal honesty, stories of spirituality & psychotherapy, & the sheer breadth of musical & narrative ideas across its whopping 17 tracks (a pretty big album back in 1998!) Oh, & then of course, the lyric "we were together during a very tumultuous time in our lives"! On a song that starts "Dear Matthew, I like you a lot". I mean...🙋🏻♂️😄 The album's filled with so many delicious moments of Alanis / @glen.ballard co-production, like when the bass unexpectedly & triumphantly enters late in songs like "Are U Still Mad?" & "Front Row", the lush melodic schoolyard breakdown in the middle of "Can't Not", the darker soundscapes & pulsing percussion of "The Couch"; back-n-forthing between vocal octaves in "Joining You", the breathy flute solo in "That I Would Be Good" or the alternate choruses of sung prose that subtly underpin "Front Row", unveiling hidden layers of story & context. 🖤 This is an album that certainly lends itself to multiple plays to unearth all its hidden gems & I still discover something new in the songs' production every time I listen. I love all these tracks muchly, but personal standout favourites for me have always been #FrontRow #JoiningYou #Unsent #TheCouch #SoPure #AreYouStillMad? #CantNot - So much love for this record! Extra love for the perfectly pitched vinyl colour scheme & transparent silver yumminess of this 2014 @MusicOnVinyl gatefold reissue. 👌🏼✨ HAPPY 20th ANNIVERSARY!
