🍭 Sugar vs 🍓 Sugar
Final post for this Mini Series.
Sugar is sugar - BUT the difference here is the nutritional value and what these impacts can have on the body!
When you compare sugar from whole foods to refined sugar chemically added to foods - they are not made equally 🙅🏼
Whole foods like fruit contain sugar but it also has an abundance of vitamins, minerals, fiber, water and antioxidants to fight off toxins in the body.
Refined sugar is refined sugar, that’s it.
Any possible nutrients have been stripped away from the refining process.
When refined sugar is consumed and there’s little to no nutrients & fiber (let’s say these skittles) it’s empty calories.
Meaning it’s not really doing your body any favours what so ever, other than spiking insulin 👉🏼 read my last post for the effects of Insulin.
The fiber in whole foods will slow down the absorption rate of sugar.
This is why “simple sugars” found in whole foods don’t increase blood sugar levels as fast as other forms of sugar (keeping in mind the glycemic index). At the end of the day,
sugar is often labelled as “unhealthy” but when it comes from healthy sources (this is including carbohydrates) it is an important nutrient 🙋🏼 although lets not go overboard on sugar here friends!
Don’t feel confused, you CAN eat refined sugar + your favorite treats 🍫🍦 it’s not going to do any damage over night.
But balance with nutrients from vegetables, whole foods, fiber and water to keep things on the healthy side 😏
