How To Workout With An Injury

Speaking from some experience here, it is never in your best interest to stop moving completely when injured unless you are absolutely told not to. When I twisted my ankle a few months ago it was excruciatingly painful but once I got through the first few weeks of letting it rest and heal, I had to keep it mobile to avoid having my ankle stiffen from lack of movement. What’s worse is when you are on an upward swing with your workout to then get injured. You don’t want to lose all that momentum but you also don’t want to make matters worse. So, what does one do? Check out some of our tips. Please remember this is NOT medical advice just us speaking from our own experience.
Go through the motions: Before you go ahead and resume your regular scheduled workouts, walk through the motions slowly and pay attention to how you feel. By doing this you can ensure you do not injure yourself further. Not only should you go through the motions that directly target the injured area but you also need to go through motions that the area acts as an accessory for. For example, an exercise that predominantly targets your legs could still effect an injured arm as the arm can be used to gain momentum throughout the exercise.

Keep tabs on your nutrition and rest: in order for your injury to heal, you need to decrease inflammation. You will want to ensure your diet is packed with anti-inflammatory rich foods. Less processed, spicy and fried foods and more fruits and vegetables. You also want to make sure you are getting more rest at night to give your body time to heal. Being rested also helps you stay alert during the day and will avoid you injuring yourself further.

Train light: Sometimes when you injure yourself you feel like you have returned to ground zero. ITS OK! It’s better to train no weight or light weight than to train heavy and hurt yourself further.

How Stretching and Massage Tools Can Increase Flexibility

Stretching is absolutely necessary for maintaining flexibility. Why do we need flexibility, you ask? There’s more than one answer to this question. Being flexible allows you to: ●  Move your body with less energy ●  Maintain a greater range of motion ●  Increase physical performance ●  Decrease your risk of injury ●  Increase blood and nutrient flow to muscles

Anyone who works a desk job for a living knows how stiff their legs, hips, and back can feel after a long day’s work. How about after a week? A year? Three years? Imagine going three years without stretching much at all. Sounds awful, right? Unfortunately, millions of people go through life living this way. Not only is ignoring stretching detrimental to your health, it generally results in our bodies feeling tight and uncomfortable.
2 Types of Stretching

If you’ve been slacking on your stretching duties, the good news is it’s never too late to start!

The two main types of stretching are called static and dynamic stretching. Static stretching is slow and controlled. An example would be sitting on the floor with your legs in front of you and slowly reaching to touch your toes.

Dynamic stretching is far less controlled and should only be performed by people who have both a history of practicing static stretching and have been informed on proper technique. An example of dynamic stretching would be holding onto a fence while swinging one leg in front of and behind you, like a pendulum.

Massage Tools

There are also tons of affordable tools on the market that can help you target stubborn knots and scar tissue, which are the result of muscle damage. When we lift weights, we’re making small tears in our muscles because we know that when they heal, they’ll regrow bigger and stronger. Damage can also result from poor posture, repeated movement, or lack of movement.

If you want to tone up, you need to incorporate BOTH resistance training 🏋🏻‍♀️ and cardio into your workout plan 💦 .
I hate running on the treadmill.... so here’s some creative exercises you can try w/ the treadmill OFF! .

👉🏼 You can start off with marching (drive your knees up) and then progress to running 🏃‍♀️ .
👉🏼 HITT Workout: Run for 1-2 mins/ Rest for 30 seconds & repeat 💦.

⚠️ Running with the treadmill off not recommended for ppl with weak ankles or Achilles, as the resistance puts a lot of strain in that area.
⚠️ Plank is a little challenging, make sure you’re not dealing with a shoulder injury while attempting this .

December is National Calf Month; or how to build massive calves!

Week 1 - your “bog standard” standing calf raises.
They can be performed on a standing calf raise machine, a machine as in the clip, on a leg press or even on a wooden block with a bar on your neck!
The main rules are:
Rule No. 1: use perfect form with the maximum range of motion, so high upon your toes and dig those heels deep.
Rule No. 2: Go Heavy or Go Home! Your calves are working hard all day, following you wherever you go so if you want to grow them you need to work them hard and then a bit harder; but always this perfect form... Rule No. 3: Start every set with a 20 second stretch; and yes that hurts!

Rule No. 4: Go Slow; you can always catch the next train (although after your calf workout your calves should be begging for mercy so running for your train might be a no no). And finally Rule No. 5: do 4 sets of 30 reps, just as simple as that!
