This art gallery has been on my wish list since university. When it didn’t work with my #byerahadley itinerary two years ago, we made a long detour on this trip to visit it. It was worth it.

An honour to be able to present just a tiny cross section of over thirty casestudies on adaptive reuse, including 837 Washington in New York, the Tai Kwun in Hong Kong and the Sammy Ofer Centre in London #byerahadley #architecture #adaptivereuse #centenarysymposium #design

It was a great honour today to present a cross section of current practice in adaptive reuse. Thank you to @usyd_arch for the opportunity to speak at the #centenarysymposium and to the interviewees, family and friends. Invaluable support also from the #byerahadley #architecture #design #cathedralthinking #adaptivereuse

immersion by dispersion | De Hogeweyk by Vivium pioneered a design that would encourage the residents who suffer from varying levels of dementia to feel like they were continuing with everyday life and didn’t become cautious or overwhelmed by unfamiliar surroundings which could aggravate their condition or cause other harm. There was a perfect balance in the design between clear wayfinding in an urban design sense through few wider, central promenades that would then be countered with a respectful disorientation and dispersion of smaller pathways to courtyards behind the main walkways. This gives the residents an immense sense of journey and placemaking in such a limited site area, providing familiarity with just the right amount of opportunities for unique interpretation of their surroundings to stimulate a mind with deteriorating cognitive function.

just a neighbour | It was important in my proposal to investigate the community beyond the site to see what social factors have contributed towards these projects being adopted so maturely and integrated so seamlessly into the built fabric. In the neighbourhood beyond the village, the primary school sits naturally beside the local mosque, unfettered by xenophobic fences and of a very similar form and scale to the dementia village. Unlike a large portion of urban and suburban schools in Sydney, this school isn’t butted up against the boundary with heavy brick plinths with threatening spiked steel posts or chainlink – a small park and garden provides the delineation of space where the children are free to play while the community walk by. Very different and idyllic but wonder how it would be received in Sydney. There seems to be a different standard of respect for other people and spaces here. .

dignity through design | De Hogeweyk is a dementia village we visited in Weesp, the Netherlands which respectfully protects the wellbeing of its residents experiencing varying levels of cognitive deterioration threatening their livelihood. A trait of the successful projects I visited was the ability of the premises to feel like an extension and incorporation of the surrounding community – both in terms of built environment aspects such as scale, form, urban planning, but more importantly the arrangement of amenities and utilisation of spaces that emulate the everyday life that the residents are attuned to. Spaces specially curated for subtle reinforcement of skills and cognitive therapy such as shops, cafes, a restaurant, a small theatre, a physiotherapist and various clubs (such as reading, writing and music) flank the main walkways which are completely operational and run by people that are trained to interact with residents living with dementia and can address any concerns that inevitably arise from time to time. They encourage visitors and welcome family and friends, to preserve the dignity and respect of the residents existence.

Next week we will be in Europe again on a self -funded study trip. The purpose is to informally continue Belqis’ Byera Hadley Research interest on art gallery architecture and to spend time with some old friends.

I am delighted and honoured to say that I will be participating at the forthcoming Centennary Symposium on Cathedral Thinking to be hosted by The University of Sydney, looking at approaches to adaptive reuse in architecture. I would like to thank the #byerahadley for giving me initial boost and drive to pursue this field of research. #architecture #design #symposium #adaptivereuse #design #sydney #research

perspective | some underlying truth to keep at the front of mind.
1. Mental illness accounts for 14% of impact of all illness in NSW, however mental health expenditure only accounted for only 8% of the 2015 NSW Health budget.
2. Almost 17% of Australians experienced some form of mental illness in a 2010 study.
3. 50% of Australians will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime. Not all illnesses are chronic, severe or debilitating. They all potentially strip people of their dignity.
4. In NSW, it is estimated that 23% of the population are living with an undetected, undiagnosed or misdiagnosed mental health problem. This can be due to fear of discrimination, lack of sufficient awareness or inability to navigate current mental health system.
5. Mental illness is perceived as a chronic stress on society and responsible for nearly a quarter of all disability. People experiencing mental illness also have higher rates of comorbidities such as high blood pressure, cancers, diabetes, obesity, respiratory or musculoskeletal diseases.
6. There are approximately 2,400 suicides annually in Australia.
7. There are approximately 20 times the amount of attempted suicides.
8. The suicide rate is 7 times higher among people living with mental illness compared to the general population. Furthermore, approximately 30% of suicides in the mental health population involve patients that were not admitted to care upon presentation at clinic, or following a discharge from care. .

happiness is only real when shared | I'm a few weeks behind on uploading and sharing my travel/research but I'm here sitting in a loft of my AirBnB in Bergen, Norway looking out over the harbour and just felt an overwhelming amount of appreciation. Appreciation for Sue Wittenoom @thesoftbuild, Mark Szczerbicki @markszczerbicki, David Sanderson and Ben Allen @archimeanie for guidance and support throughout my graduation project which helped me formulate my #Byera. Appreciation for Farisa @farisa.a being able to join me on my travelling research and being my personal assistant and photographer (currently napping next to me). Appreciation for my boss Clinton @clintoncole_ for encouraging me at work. Appreciation for all my friends and family for their love. And special appreciation for my mum who motivated me to pursue such an incredible journey and to help learn more about her strength and perseverance. I was watching 'Into The Wild' with Farisa last night and the line "happiness is only real when shared" resonated deeply with me. (Photo actually taken in West Disbury, Manchester 😏).

international precedent | my trip is taking me through Scandinavia and northern Europe, to cities and cultures which have reconceptualised the role of the built urban fabric and supporting social networks, proven to much more effectively address the impacts of mental health on the individual, the community and the greater society. Whilst I will be visiting the sites themselves, what is more important in my investigation is how the design process was stretched beyond a traditional collaboration of built environment specialists, to include mental healthcare professionals, doctors, staff, patients and the greater community within which the project sits. From left to right in chronological order; De Hogeweyk Dementia Village by Vivium in Weesp (NL), Humanitas Intergenerational Housing in Deventer (NL), the SPACE Youth Mental Health Clinic by Maurice Shapero Architects for 42nd Street Charity in Manchester (UK), Kronstad Hospital by Origo Arkitektgruppe (NO), Helsingor Psychiatric Hospital by BIG and JDS (DK), and the House of Psychiatry by Tengbom Architects (SE). .

Over the next few months I will be undertaking my Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship, which has supported my research into the changing perceptions and relationships between the built environment and its occupants to improve mental health. Many thanks to NSWARB @architectureinsights for the opportunity to pursue my passion in strengthening links to understanding mental health and the role of architecture. You can find my proposal called “the architecture of mental health: a new mental health approach for urban communities” in my bio.

The Finding Country: Radical Practice exhibition at Tin Sheds gallery will slowly disappear as portions are periodically burned. The exhibition brings together material from a number of variations of the Finding Country project led by @kevino_brien consisting of experiments which re-engage an Aboriginal reconceptualisation of Country. I was lucky enough to participate in one of these sessions a few years ago, truly radical practice. The exhibition was curated by Dr Alex Brown and worth a look before it burns away @usyd_arch #tinshedsgallery @iakoveh @tucothekidramirez #byerahadley #curatingarchitecture #architectureexhibition #byera
