Planning to pack your Thanksgiving leftovers in Tupperware? If you do, you’ll be packing them in a piece of American history.
Earl Tupper invented Tupperware in the late 1940s, transforming a waste product of the oil refining process into flexible, translucent plastic containers with an airtight seal to keep leftovers fresh. But how could he get Americans to trust—and buy—his invention?
Businesswoman Brownie Wise had the answer: parties. Brownie Wise didn’t create the home party sales model, but she pioneered it for Tupperware. Tupperware parties transformed the company’s reputation … and helped drive sales. The parties did more than sell the plastic containers—they offered women (and men) an opportunity to start their own businesses.

This is where it all began! Byron Brecke began working for for Galbraith Plumbing and Heating in 1945. He worked his way up the ladder until he purchased the company in 1964 and renamed it B.G. Brecke, Inc.

Economists like to explain the constant churn of the economy as “creative destruction.” It implies a silver lining when a single company breaks up—something better might take its place. An interesting way to think about this concept is by looking at historical examples of companies that have come and gone. That’s exactly what our new chart does. http://crwd.fr/2mxMZSR

While the Thanksgiving window display heartened me, far more interesting was what was above: the old school signage for Fox Drug Stores. It adds to the retro feel of this independent drugstore in an era of soulless corporate chains, and adds to the small-town feel of Old Town Torrance (despite the fact it's just a city within a larger urban area that makes up the metropolis that is Los Angeles). While the store is independently owned and operated by druggists who have run this store for roughly 30 years now, the site is older than that. It first opened in November 1949 as the third Torrance location of McCown Drugstore, part of a small regional chain of stores in the South Bay area (other locations included Gardena, Compton, and Hermosa Beach, as well as other sites). The first Torrance store opened in 1942, on Sartori. AJ McCown built this store and ran it, along with his other stores, until December 1959, when Fox Markets bought all the McCown stock. Presumably, this is when it became Fox Drug Stores.

I haven't seen the sign lit up at night yet, but even so, it's a nice sign, and a great reminder there are still local and mom-and-pop businesses out there that continue to thrive. As the great-grandson of a California druggist, I'm pleased to see this business open and serving the community. #vintagesignage #vintagesign #oldsign #signage #neonsign #vintageneon #latergram #1960ssign #oldschool #oldschooldrugstore #drugstore #FoxDrugs #FoxDrugsTorrance #FoxDrugstore #FoxDrugstores #McCown #AJMcCown #McCownDrugstore #history #businesshistory #Torrancehistory #OldTownTorrancehistory #SouthBay #SouthBayLA #SouthBayHistory #1327ElPradoAvenue #OldTownTorrance #Torrance #TorranceCA #discoverTorrance
