I get questioned sometimes on my favorite game developer/publisher and I look at them with a smile and easily say, “Squaresoft”. They were unstoppable in the 90’s with their staple RPG’s, but they even took a left turn and tried a few different genres like a shoot ‘em up, fighting, and a visual novel! Most people won’t like every title that they released, but I’m one of the few who actually enjoyed what Squaresoft had to offer. I can point at 99% of the games shown and tell you about when I played this growing up in the 90’s/early 00’s. The only game shown that I’ve yet to play is Another Mind because it’s a visual novel and has yet to be translated. ——————
I know most are probably more familiar with Square Enix, but I feel like since the merger in 2003 that the quality of content has lessened tremendously— you get some good games here and there (Final Fantasy XII, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the upcoming Dragon Quest XI), but they take less risks than they did over 15 years ago and I get why per a business standpoint, but I sort of get annoyed when all I see is Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts (especially the spin-offs); branch out and take small risks again and not with crap ports of classics on iOS/Steam (oh, and that Secret of Mana remake, though).
Squaresoft will always be a 10/10 just based on the diverse amount of content where Square Enix is around a 6/10; some great games once in awhile, but they’ll never return to the greatness that was Squaresoft, in my opinion.
