This is for my San Diego and Tijuana followers. Listen up. A couple days ago I had a Bday party at the beach. I'd been traveling and was tired and didn't want to lift a finger so I asked for a recommendation on burritos, the real kind, not the sh*t you sometimes get with like forty ingredients, cumin and 75 grams of fat. I wanted "machaca" (shredded, braised beef) and beans (just mashed). I'm a part of this secret Tijuana working moms facebook group and they all overwhelmingly recommended Paty Ruiz, a Tijuana mom who also happens to be a friend pretty much since birth. My mom and her mom did a lot of charity work for Tijuana orphanages together, presenting plays to benefit the kids. So she and I spent a lot of time not only in school but in the Tijuana theater together. Long story short, I ordered them blind. Never tasted them before. Close to 80 of them for my 20 family members. Slender, delectable, tender, traditional burritos. One of the most challenging aspects of mastering Mexican flavors is to make your dish not end up heavy, something I very much pride myself in. But for Paty to be able to accomplish that in a dish with flour tortillas, beans and/or meat is pretty remarkable. I ate 8. EIGHT!!!!!! They disappeared and everybody commented on how it took them back to Tijuana growing up. Philip, business man that he is, said "take this woman to New York. She'll be making 3k cash a day in a cart in Times Square..."
Long story short, I'll never endorse anyone or anything I don't believe in. It's cost me some money and even some jobs. But here you'll only find what is truly a part of me and my family's life. So yeah, find Paty because I need to have a little pow wow with her and tell her to raise her prices. So run, don't walk and get a cooler of burritos (that's just how you do it) and head to the beach. Paty, thanks for taking me back. Working mamas unite.
