As you would expect, they taste very good their own but trust me, order yourself a bowl of laksa (I have always been a fan of the one here) and slide a few of these babies in for instant shiokness and #HighSES gratification.

Unless guilt sets in and that’s when I choose lighter dishes like sliced fish soup, my default setting is big, strong flavours. So an item like the Nduja and Burrata Toast ($16+) found in @sidewayssg’s weekend brunch menu, resonates strongly with me.
Spread over made-from-scratch sourdough that’s baked fresh daily is a spicy sausage paste from Italy. It packs a strong punch but is balanced wonderfully by the poached eggs and mashed up Burrata cheese. A refreshing, aromatic lift is contributed by the fresh mint and basil.
I would say this is one of the best brunch items I’ve had in a long while.

The dessert they called Ice2 (Ice Ice) Baby. Designed to cool the heat from their Szechuan spiciness. A combination of ice jelly, fruits (dragonfruit, fig, pomegranate), cucumber and crushed peanuts for varied textures. It was supposed to be topped with rice wine granita which we couldn’t find. Maybe that was also why we found the dessert wasn’t as icy cold as its name suggested. Beautiful though to the eyes.

Japanese style Ramen noodles dish that consists of Ramen noodles with pork based Shoyu broth served with slices of pork Chashu, scallions, beansprouts and seaweed.

This Chashumen is amazing!! The pork based Shoyu broth was not very thick yet very flavorful!! The pork Chashu was also tender and juicy!!

The distinct part about the cuisines here got no bird nor feather; but the Sze Chuan spicy tastes in their modern contemporary dishes.
We were attracted and recommended to this Forbidden Risotto. Black rice done risotto style with fried soybeans, it was delicious and beautiful.
Our sides were the spicy ones. Charcoal deep fried pork bits and calamari with yuzu mayo, both were sprinkled with chilli powder for that spicy kick. While these were still of an comfortable spicy level; the pork ear jelly in Mala sauce easily numbed our tongues.
So while we enjoyed the meal for something different from what we’d usually have; the spicy Sze Chuan nest was one we probably wouldn’t frequent. A good one though for those who loves spicy food.

Never, ever disappoints - big reason why “Din Tai Fung” still commands queues all the time.
On my last visit (right after I watched David Chang’s @uglydelicious’ episode called “Stuffed”), I had the “Chilli Crab Xiao Long Bao”, a special edition they roll out across Singapore during National Day month. It still hits the sweet spot of blending the chilli crab element with everything that makes their signature soup-filled pork dumpling perfect.

Took my parents to Mrs. Pho for the first time tonight. Enthusiastic dining action coupled with a few praises indicated that it was a success. They shared a bowl of beef brisket pho as well as small plates of grilled meatballs, fresh springrolls and a papaya salad.
As usual, I got my order of the “M5” (bun thit nuong cha gio). The dry style of rice stick noodles with grilled pork chop, crispy spring roll, meat balls, fresh salad and herbs still tasted good even though I had not visited in ages.

Sprucing up the food scene in Yishun is @onesushisg - a fuss-free Japanese restaurant that has both a sushi belt and a automated car that delivers food directly to your seat!

My personal fav includes the Gindara Mentai ($8.80) which is cod with mentaiko, and torched when ordered. The saltiness of the mentai pairs well with the sweetness of the cod, making it a perfect pairing. Alternatively, you can have a go at the Karatsuki Hotate Mentai ($5.80), Ebi Mentai ($6.80) or French Fries Mentai ($3.80).

Another ongoing promotion that they have is that all yellow plate sushi are going at $1/plate between 2.30pm to 5.30pm daily!

To say the plating here is visually captivating is an understatement.
The second of our 5-course meal, and the most Oriental in terms of taste profile in my opinion, arrived on a plate that looked like a pair of hands was carefully cradling the duck (don’t you just love a clever trompe-l’œil?). Perfectly apt seeing how delectable the braised French Challans duck revealed itself to be.
With the stringiness all but gone, the flesh was silky-smooth and soft, caressing my mouth almost, along with the voluptuous eggplant cream. Crunchy water chestnut, springy jelly mushrooms and slippery kanten noodles were the refreshing accents to each bite, multiplying the facets of texture and flavour exponentially in this slightly sweet dish.

We have been coming to this Hunan family-run eatery for a few years and here is the dish we never not order (price: $18.80). In fact, the owner himself knows to scribble it down on his order pad without even us asking.
Featured in the fragrant stir-fry are thin slices of pork (they have moved on to using a leaner cut these days), plenty of huge green chillies, very spicy small pickled chilies and chopped garlic. I am sure just by reading those words you can tell how extremely appetising the dish is. And it is compulsory to savour it with steaming hot rice.
We like coming here because #ziweitangfolksouppot has a comfortable homely vibe. As the owner’s wife cooks in the kitchen at her pace, he runs the front of house and keeps an eye on their younger child, a toddler son, as he roams around with his minder close at his heels.

Some eat the meats, greens, and rice separately. Some like it all mixed up. How do you like to makan at The Salted Plum?

Tonight marked the 2nd and last night of its collaboration with @ahhuakelong for a 6-course dinner.
Besides the freshness of the seafood, we did see some similarities in throughout the meal with those we tasted at @scaledbyahhuakelong . Not a surprise since Chef Alex of Porta did come a long way with the man behind Scaled, inspiring each other in some of the dishes we enjoyed today.
The curry mussels would be a familiar sight to many from Scaled, but given a more coconut and lemak touch by Chef Alex. The curry was friendlier but still tasty so much that we cleaned up the last drop in our bowls.
The meal was really good value-for-money, to think that we had a Grouper and a seabass dish for each of us.
Appreciated Chef Alex taking his time to explain how the taste from broth in the Pearl Grouper dish was absolutely all natural without any salt. Liked how it was warm and comforting to eat, reminding us of the all-familiar local Tze Char taste.
The experience was also made more pleasurable with Jing Kai @kingkongkai of Scaled playing a very good host to the diners.
This was Scaled’s first and a successful collaboration, and we heard that it is already working on its next later this year. We will certainly be watching out for it.

Q: What goes into Chef @tomoo_thebolobao’s signature mini rice bowl that’s served at the close of his omakase meal?

A: This bountiful blend of uni, ikura, toro and very soft onsen eggs. He stirs everything together to get them evenly mixed before spooning the luxurious lusciousness onto mounds of sushi rice waiting in small bowls.

Honestly, it is hard to top a happy ending of this calibre.

It’s not every day that one gets to try a cured ox heart (smoked to be specific). But I realise 4-hands pop-up events at @restaurantnouri can deliver a few surprises. Which is how I found myself last night staring at said organ, looking all blackened and hard, being grated over a plate of slow-roasted cabbage, bacon dashi emulsion and cashew sour cream.
This delicious dish was one of seven (only officially, there was definitely more than that) for dinner. And it felt like a deep collaborative effort by Chef Eelke Plasmeijer of @restaurantlocavore in Bali (ranked no. 22 on #asias50best) and Chef @ivanbrehm of Nouri, recent recipient of one Michelin star. I found their creations to lean heavily towards Indonesian specialties and ingredients, which was fun to discover as stronger flavours ruled the meal ($200++ per person for dinner).

‘Twas a lunch of a massive double stack free-range Sakura chicken burger. If you think that was a mouthful, wait till you bite into this insane burger. Me-eat vol. 02 of Three Buns’ Tribute creations, the 2Stac Shakur Burger. What you get for $22: a crispy double stack, both the thigh and the breast, coated with a sriracha and Hennessy mayonnaise, Mofo buffalo sauce, pickled daikon, and a side of buffalo wing. Read: a massive orgy of meat and sauces that’ll have you shrieking with joy in no time at all. I like that the sauces pack a real punch, with the shredded daikon adding a refreshing tang and crunch, which really made this quite the standout burger. Quite a good place for fast-food fish and chips, for a few simple reasons.
1. Decent fish with nice batter at affordable price. Despite their range of fishes, we still preferred their dory fish which was cheapest but nicest, especially to go with their dips.
2. Yummy razor thin chips. Forget the usual fries for chips. These thinly sliced chips were the real deal.
3. Free-flow dips. Their dips had to be one of the main draw for us. Curry, XO, salted egg, cheese mayo, etc. And all unlimited!
4. No-frill dining. Fast-food style it was. Just order, pay and collect to eat. Simple to enjoy a fish and chips meal. Halfway thru the week, sometimes quick and simple is good too.

“Buddha” isn’t the only one willing to “Jump Over The Wall” for this.
I for one, am equally gung-ho because under the serene yin-yang scallop “cheong fun” is a riot of boisterous flavours.
Lift those silky sheets and you’ll be pulled into a group hug by the “wolf pack” of iberico pork, scallops and abalone. In an instant, these party animals will have you getting down like there’s no tomorrow not just with them but also shiitake custard, lotus seeds and shiitake mushroom cap. Things can get really intense in the pool of rich pork broth.
And then, when it’s all over, you’ll be left a little dazed and overwhelmed, changed forever by the experience.

Moonstruck as I was by the extraordinarily creative packaging, the snow skin mini mooncakes within were the real reason I was beaming.
The gorgeous petite creations, every one of them coated in the softest-of-the-soft snow skin pastry, are the result of an exclusive collaboration between pastry chef @chouxxfleur of one Michelin-starred @Misterjius in San Francisco and Yan Ting Chinese restaurant’s pastry and dimsum chef @chaivanness.
Here are my thoughts on the four new flavours I got to try:
1. Jasmine Tea Paste with Salted Egg Yolk and Melon Seeds - If I had to rank the mooncakes, this would occupy the top spot because of the delicate perfume of the jasmine tea.
2. Custard with Macadamia Nuts - You should zero in on this if you are into nuts. They tuck whole macadamias inside for crunch.
3. Black Sesame Paste with Salted Peanut Truffle - My niece’s favourite of the lot and it’s easy to understand why as the saltiness from the white chocolate-encased peanut truffle is a clever counterpoint to the mildly sweet black sesame. I‘ve to say, I loved this very much too.
4. Red Date and Wolfberry Paste with Almond Flakes - This had me instantly thinking of “cheng tng” dessert and that’s a good thing since it’s one of my preferred local desserts.

One other thing to add is the sweetness level across all the mooncakes is well controlled, something I consider very important.

If you are looking for delicious snow skin mooncakes presented with a strong “wow” factor, I think these ones from #yantingsg are seriously worth considering. Anyone lucky enough to receive them will be over the moon.
