Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China Trip - Brush-making Lessons: While our workshop group was learning about ceramics and tea, we also delved into how to hand-make artisan brushes used for glazing ceramics and burnishing tea wares.
At the Bagongshawan Dai Pottery, Jackson Li of the Jingdezhen @sanbaostudio Ceramics Academy taught everyone how construct brushes using various techniques. The main method that we utilized as a group was using a stone to pound a piece of bamboo to separate and flatten the fibers apart in order to soften and form the head of the brush. Each brush took thousands of hits to soften the bristles of the brush. After shaving off any loose or uneven bristles with a knife, the brush was as smooth as a feather!
At the @NCECA Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, I had the pleasure of working with Jackson at his booth selling many handmade brushes. It was a wonderful experience discussing and demonstrating what we had learned during the workshop with the attendees of the conference.
