I became good at pretending. I became so good that after a while the lines blurred between my truth and fiction. And sometimes, when I did a really good job of pretending, I even fooled myself.
- Ruta Sepetys, Salt to the Sea
This book broke my heart. From beginning to end it tugged at all my heart strings and left me with tears in my eyes! I realize it's historical fiction, and they aren't real people. But the events are true! What these people went through is true! Their age did not save them from the horrors of war. Their nationality did not protect them from the utter devastation. Lives were taken! Lives were shattered! Lives were lost!
I truly believe this is a book that everyone should read. It's so well written and a complete eye opener to an event that is being lost to history.
