After just three seasons, in late 1979, GM restyled it’s big B and C body cars into squarer, more upright looking machines - just in time for another gas crisis and a recession, from which it looked, for a short time, like big cars might never recover. In a macro sense, they didn’t - the brief renaissance of full-size cars in the mid-eighties didn’t last, but it did prolong the life of the GM’s big cars into the 90s. But they didn’t change much, and the boxy styling (indeed, this generation of Caprice/Impala is often referred to as the “box”) was at odds with the aero-look trends of the mid-eighties. Before GM had enough confidence to completely restyle and update the cars for the 90s, they invested in some light updates. Although wagons continued at Buick, Olds, and Pontiac, the #Caprice (the Impala was dropped after 1985 after years of being a “poverty spec” fleet car) and the Cadillac Brougham were the last big rear-drive sedans in GM’s lineup, and the Caprice was the first to get an “aero look” update, for 1987, consisting mainly of new fascias front and rear, with integrated headlights. Top-spec Caprices also got a fussy landau top, but most of these cars were now selling to fleets - and looked alot like this. This isn’t a fleet car, but a hot rodded Caprice #Brougham LS. The police variant, the Caprice 9C1, became the hottest big car of the era with the 1989 addition of a roller-cam L05 350 V8. This exotic machine was built for the cops, and most were run hard and put away wet, then sold cheap and used as cabs - real 9C1s are hard to come by today. Regular Caprices were still limited to the Chevy 4.3 V6 or, more often, the ubiquitous #Chevy 305 V8, with fuel injection beginning in 1989, but because these cars were designed to accept any Chevy small block and take the kind of abuse that police interceptors do, they are easily transformed into sleepers capable of warp speed. The restyled 1991 #ChevroletCaprice met with mixed reviews but was even faster in police form. GM abandoned the full-size, rwd market to Ford after 1996.
